Top Ten List

We ask the authors what are their Top Ten Historical Magical Romance.  Here are their answers:

AM/SEW:  Fictional: When a medieval Scottish hero (with Highlander swagger and a glint in his eye) strides toward the heroine, his sword strapped low at his side, his intent clear: he means to ravish her.

AM/SEW:  Fictional: When that same medieval Scottish hero sweeps his heroine into his arms and carries up the turret stair to his bedchamber: again, his purpose is ravishment.

AM/SEW:  Fictional: When in a Scottish time travel romance, a heroine who passionately loves medieval Scotland discovers that she has actually time-traveled there: bliss! (hey, my heroines love landing back in time – as would I, given the chance)

AM/SEW: True History: Robert the Bruce’s triumph over Edward II and the English at the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314. (would love to have witnessed this victory)

AM/SEW:  True History: The Declaration of Arbroath on April 6th, 1320 – a letter signed by the Scottish barons and to Pope John XXII declaring Scotland’s independence and support of Robert the Bruce. (would love to have seen this, too – have been to Arbroath Abbey where it happened – hence the name – and had chills to walk there and think of the power that must’ve crackled in the air that day, at such a mighty and influential-to-Scottish history gathering)

BJ: True History:  The Battle of New Orleans – The ragtag Americans fought the great British Army and won.  It shows you that the underdog can win.

BJ:  Fiction:  When Sir Nicholas the Dragon goes against King Author for the woman he loves.  CHRISTMAS IN CAMELOT

BJ:  Fiction:  When Whitney goes to Claymore to face Clayton Westmoreland who is going to announce his engagement to Vanessa.  Whitney has to swallow her pride and force Clayton into an argument to find out he still loves her.  WHITNEY MY LOVE

BJ: Fictional -  When Trevor Claremont is blind-sided by a pickpocket who stabs him, and he finds he cannot let her go.  THE WICKED LADY

BJ: Fictional – When Jon Snow lives!!! GAME OF THRONES

Last Word: The authors would like to thank Just Love Books  for hosting us today. We hope readers will enjoy Lords of Love and Legend: Magical Tales of Timeless Desire.

Thank you Allie, Brenda and Sue. Truly enjoyed going thru the list.

Rachel Bennett attended her ten-year high school reunion on a whim, but fate intervened once she saw Shane MacLeod. No longer the shy, gawky teenager she remembered, Shane has matured into a handsome and successful man, but her perfect evening ends when another man from her past suddenly reappears.
Craig Walker had been her mentor until he became jealous of her talent and success. Now he intends to either have her, or destroy her at all costs.
As Rachel’s family pressures her to take Craig to court, she can no longer ignore her nagging feeling that a tragedy is about to strike.

Excerpt

It took some time for Craig to find his way around Reid Park, but he eventually found the Desert Sunrise alumni picnic. He casually strolled around, pretending to be just another park visitor on a balmy Saturday morning. Before long, a bench near the playground opened up. He took a seat and watched the people go by. The picnic had a good turnout, but so far he hadn’t spotted Rachel among the crowd. He checked his watch. It was half past eleven. The picnic was supposed to last until two, so perhaps she hadn’t arrived yet. He reached for his phone and checked his messages as he watched the caterers set up.

The scent of grilling hamburgers and hot dogs soon filled the air. His mouth watered and he made a mental note to grab a burger on his way back to the hotel. He leaned back on the bench and kept a close watch on the crowd, but still no sign of Rachel or Bill, her companion from the night before. People soon lined up for lunch, and he waited patiently as the crowd worked its way through. He checked his watch once the last person was served. It was nearly one o’clock and the games were starting, although a few late arrivals were still showing up. He remained on the bench until the caterers started breaking down, then he slowly rose to his feet and brushed himself off. Part of him was disappointed she hadn’t shown up, but the rest of him felt elated. He had succeeded in scaring her off. He smiled to himself as he strolled back to his car.

About Marina Martindale

Marina Martindale Pic
Just like Gillian Matthews, the heroine in her debut romance novel, The Reunion, Marina Martindale began her career as a graphic designer and artist, and several of her paintings have been featured in juried art shows. Over time, however, she discovered writing was her true life’s passion.
“I love creating conflicted characters,” says Martindale. “I think they’re more like the people we meet in real life. I also like the complexity of romance. It’s an opportunity to delve deep into the human condition and try to understand what it is that motivates us to make the choices in life that we make.”
Martindale draws her inspiration from her own real life experiences, as well as those of the people around her. The stories, however, are fiction.
“The path to true love is never an easy one,” adds Martindale. “Some are haunted by people from their past. Others have been deceived or betrayed by the people they trusted the most. We all make bad choices, even though we usually don’t realize it at the time. My stories are about the unintended consequences of those bad choices, how the characters resolve them, and how they grow and become better people as a result.”
Marina Martindale resides in Tucson, Arizona. In her spare time she enjoys music, traveling, photography, and cooking.

Excerpt

Read an excerpt from Love Only Once:

“Come back soon, Lady Elizabeth,” Jeffrey said as he reached for the door handle. “And I’ll have my eyepiece in next time.” The buttler opened the door for her.

I will—” Elizabeth didn’t finish her sentence.

“My, my. Fancy seeing you here,” Jonathan Hird said to an astounded Elizabeth.

This wasn’t possible! Elizabeth’s mind screamed. Jonathan couldn’t be standing in front of her. Hadn’t his father just told her he’d gone to sail with Lafitte? Maybe she should turn and ask Jeffery if he saw Jonathan, too.

“Lord Jonathan,” Jeffrey said. “It is good to have you home, sir. You remember Lady Elizabeth.”

“Unfortunately,” Jonathan clipped.

Elizabeth promptly shut her mouth. Jonathan stood before her and he looked magnificent. His skin was darkly tanned, swarthy, and his eyes were hard. He’d been good-looking before, but now he was so much more so. He seemed bigger and bolder. He fairly reeked of sensuality.

Keeping his gaze fixed on her, he asked, “What? Nothing to say for yourself?” His voice was cold and exact.

She clenched her jaw to kill the sob in her throat. “I—I was visiting your father,” she finally managed to get out.

Jonathan leaned against the railing and stared at her, taking in her appearance. She looked well and beautiful. There was a glow of innocence and promise, but he knew better than to be suckered in by that. As his gaze traveled downward, he noticed she was breathing heavily. Then his gaze rose to her stubborn chin and those damnable eyes. She flinched and retreated a step.

He wasn’t ready to deal with Elizabeth yet. He’d intended to see his father, get settled in, and get some much-needed sleep since he’d not done so in two days. He hadn’t expected to see her so soon. The problem of Elizabeth would have to come later when he informed her of his mission.

Now he stood face-to-face with her and, of course, the guilt was plainly visible in her eyes. “I hope you didn’t make my father any promises you don’t intend to keep,” Jonathan bit out as he ignored the mocking voice inside him that wondered why.

Elizabeth flinched again. She could sense the barely controlled power coiled in Jonathan’s body. “No, I did not.” She should have realized he’d still be angry, but she didn’t want to face Jonathan at the moment. As she stared at him, she realized, much to her horror, that she still loved him. She had hoped that time would lessen her love, but that wasn’t the case. The love and the hurt were still there.

If possible, he was much more commanding in appearance than he had been when she’d first fallen in love. His shoulders seemed broader, his hair a bit longer. The arrogant line of his jaw told her he wasn’t happy to see her at all.

Elizabeth simply wasn’t prepared, but she had to say something. She swallowed and moistened her lips, forcing herself to settle down.  “Your father will be glad that you are home,” she said as she struggled to maintain an even, conciliatory tone. “How long have you been back?”

“I just arrived,” he stated curtly with absolutely no emotion.

This wasn’t her Jonathan. His eyes were cold, and the devilish personality that had always made her laugh was nowhere in sight.

It was gone.

Perhaps it was lost forever. Had she done this to him?

He shifted impatiently and crossed his arms over his chest “Your coloring isn’t good, my dear. One would think you’d seen a ghost.”

Her eyes grew wide as her gaze shifted. “Your arm! You can move it”

“Your observation is correct. I’m not the cripple you left at the altar.”

She felt a nauseating wave of despair. “I never thought of you that way.” Elizabeth’s throat tightened. “I—I must be going.”

“Of course. Running away is your style.”

He might as well have slapped her, but she deserved it. Tears stung her eyes, but she would never let him see them. She lifted her chin, picked up her skirt, and stepped quickly around him. She hurried out into the street, tears blurring her vision. She had to get away from Jonathan. Now!

She never saw it coming.

Internal Affairs be damned, Detective Amanda Werner's ditching protocol to hunt the vigilante whose bullet landed her on the bench. But this is no vendetta. Evidence suggests he's the zealot offing corrupt public officials--the same zealot who's promised to set the city ablaze by week's end--and she'll risk her career and her life to save her hometown. Too bad she can't find anything stronger than Kevlar to guard her heart against her primary suspect: a masked man with a telepathic German shepherd, unstable supernatural hearing, and lips that invite a whole different brand of investigation.
All businessman Ryan McLelas, a.k.a. Klepto, wants is redemption. But even if Amanda could forgive his itchy trigger finger, Ryan still has to convince her that his alter ego's no serial killer. No small task, with syndicate-paid police officers turning up among the dead. He'd better keep his own syndicate ties close to his chest and Amanda even closer, because if Klepto is unmasked while he's hunting the real killer, their passionate affair could mark Amanda as the next dirty cop on the hit list.

Excerpt

Reasonable priority number one: Catch Klepto in the act. Reasonable priority number two: Put a serial killer away for good.

Amanda sighed. Dutiful reminders weren't enough to stop the worry over Ryan's head injury, the wish his brother hadn't been hurt, nor the less-altruistic, irresponsible dreams of a night ending in the condo. Her flirtatious troublemaker had been so still for long minutes as she had tried to pry the truck doors open and break the useless, shatter-proof windshield. It had taken both her and Jay to rouse him. Now she had to be away from him. What if he had a concussion?

She wanted hours just to touch him. Every inch of skin bared, massaged in a 100% innocent post-truck accident inspection. Her fingers curled as fantasies surrounded her like a heated blanket. Ryan's arms would have been far more accommodating than her cold, lumpy couch.

And the sex?

She caught her breath at a tangle of wanton memories that made the apex of her thighs heat and clench. She'd never hear jazz music the same way again.

"Play Klepto's game, secure his trust, find the evidence before dinner. That's what matters," she whispered to the dark. "How can you be thinking about a romp under the covers while the city's under attack by a psycho who likes to break into your house and leave you roses?"

Klepto wouldn't catch her unaware and in bed a second time.

Bed. Ryan. That wild look in his eyes when he came with her name on his lips and asked her to be his date for the fundraiser. Ryan, infamous for parading around a different woman on a daily basis, had admitted he wanted her for more than one night.

She swallowed hard. How many more? With the cameras rolling, how long would it take the playboy to become bored with his new lover?

Every light in the living room and kitchen went out, leaving only the half-moon to drench her house in shadows. Instinct blotted out her unsettling questions. She slid to the floor, her high heels sinking into the carpet as the back door cracked open. A masculine silhouette entered the kitchen with slow, quiet footsteps.

A split second later, her security system wailed.

Klepto went down like he'd been shot.

She scooted around the couch to recover line of sight. Back door intact and closed. No one else there, just Klepto, sprawled on the tile, his hands over his hood and his body shuddering as if the strident tone of the alarm had dealt him a physical blow. She gasped.
"Turn it off!" A growl, a plea, a howl of such animalistic pain she almost couldn't recognize the words.

It took only a moment to fling herself at the alarm panel but when the blaring siren died, his attempt to rise ended with him swaying on his hands and knees. She had a ridiculous urge to make sure he was okay. To apologize, when she could have been sprinting for the phone. Not that calling the police was the best option. Breaking and entering wasn't the evidence she needed to ensure his life sentence.

Crouching by his side, she pressed her palm to his still-quaking shoulder. "Klepto? What happened?"

"Alarm," he groaned.

Her intuition was broken. It had to be. Compassion had no place in her plan to send this man to prison.

"You're not allowed to die on my kitchen floor." She dropped to her knees, the tile frigid against her bare skin as she draped his arm over her shoulder. "Felled by an alarm. What kind of master thief are you, anyway?"

Impartiality wavered as the intimate position shoved her ear against his chest, his breath warm on the back of her neck. This man, mint and danger, should not interest her hormones in the slightest.

Should not have been waiting for Klepto while thinking about Ryan.

Under the pretense of shoving his body upright against the island, she slid her hands around his waist to discreetly check for the bulge of a weapon. Clear.

She let go, but Klepto slumped forward. Her hands slammed into his strong shoulders, pure muscle under leather. No shoulder holster, either. He was weakened and at her mercy, but she couldn't lock him up before he led her to the stolen showstopper bullets or the gun. Everything that pointed to him as the serial killer so far was, at best, circumstantial. At worst, coincidental.

"If you're done feeling me up, I could use some Tylenol."

Review + Giveaway: Before She Became a Lady by Wareeze Woodson

Before She Became a Lady Cover

Review

A Sweet Historical Romance Novel: Love Conquers All
Rating: 5 Stars

Before She Became A Lady is a sweet romance novel depicting how even during historical past, love still overcomes no matter what challenges lie in its path.

The story centers around Laurel Collingsworth, only 17 years of age but already set to marry Lord Robert Lanningham.  Reading the first few pages, I had this initial impression of her being immature and how she may not yet be primed for marriage. As the story developed, I started seeing a transformation within her, and by the very last page, she had become a totally different person, one definitely fit to be called a Lady.

Perhaps it is the different clashes, conflicts and challenges she faced all throughout the story that molded her character. It is not only the new environment that she found herself in, or the new faces that she had to live and contend with day-in day-out, but also having to adjust to married life and even to live with and love a "different" Robert.  Through all this, we see Laurel started portraying courage, a steely determination and a new level of maturity in her character to rise above all these odds.

The pace of the story is just right. Personally, I had hoped for a more intense resolution on the mystery aspects in the story. This would have added  a few thrilling moments.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading the story as a whole, especially the historical nature of the story. Fans of historical romance will definitely love this.

“Mark, can you check the store?” my manager asks me. “A load of teenagers have just come in and I don’t like the look of them. Light-fingered bunch, the lot of them. Can you stroll down the aisles?”

Jeez. The man sees a potential thief in everyone and I roll my eyes behind his back. I’ve been a store detective for a week and think the job sucks. Nothing interesting ever happens apart from inside this man’s head, and if it does, I really don’t give a fuck. What do I care if some kids nick a few beers? For the money I’m earning, it’s really no skin off my nose. Good luck to ’em.

I leave the office and go down the first aisle. As predicted, fuck-all happening, and I’m tempted to go home early. The boss goes home in five anyway. I round an aisle and stop. A cute little blonde has just stuffed two lipsticks into her shirt. I watch mesmerized as she then sashays out of the store in a pair of tight little shorts. I grin. Things have become interesting all of a sudden.

I follow her out of the store and put a hand on her shoulder. “Would you like to come back into the store with me, Miss? I believe you have something that’s not yours.”

I feel her jump guiltily before she slowly turns around. She looks up at me all awkward and embarrassed. I can’t believe my luck. Up close, I think she’s breath-taking. Her pixie face is tanned, clear skinned and free of makeup, which I like. Her huge green eyes draw me in and I like the look of guilt in them. Her body is well-toned and displayed for my pleasure in a pair of light pink shorts and short-sleeved shirt. I can’t wait to get her alone in the office and teach her the error of her ways! And she definitely needs it.

The girl follows me reluctantly back into the store. I take her to the far end and into a room. I can’t wait to start questioning her. This is going to be fun, and I’m going to behave totally inappropriately toward her, which will probably get me fired at the end of the day. But if it means tasting this sweet little thing, I think

I can manage without the crap pay check.

I shut the door with a loud click and the girl jumps nervously. I think it’s cute how she chews nervously on her lower lip. Pretty soon, I’ll be biting that lip.

“I believe you’ve taken something from the store that doesn’t belong to you, Miss,” I say sternly, waiting for her to admit to her guilt.

She looks up at me.

“I haven’t taken anything.” Her breathless voice makes me hard as nails. “You must have made a mistake.”

I study her for a few minutes to make her squirm in the heavy silence.

“It’s going to be like that, is it?” I drawl. “In which case, I’m going to have to frisk you.”

I walk forward before she can blink an eye, turn her around, place her hands above her head, flat palmed against the door, and I nudge her legs slightly apart. Then I totally break the rules by running my hands down her body, patting her down, pretending to look for the lipsticks when I know she’s stuffed them down her bra all along.

“Hey!” she squeaks. “I don’t think you can do this to me.”

“Hush, sweet cheeks,” I whisper near her ear and feel her shiver at my close proximity. “I can do what I like to girls who misbehave. Where’ve you hidden them, darlin’?”

The girl draws in a breath as my hands lightly run down her arms, over her chest and breasts, where they linger, only to squeeze the mounds and rub her nipples into hard peaks, before continuing down her body.

“I really don’t think you have any right to touch me like this.” It comes out a gasp, but she’s leaning into my touch.

“Did you hide them in your shorts?” I rasp as I run my hands over her bum in the tight, tiny shorts, cupping the cheeks and squeezing them. I can’t help myself.

Then my hand sneaks around the front and rubs her mound through the thin material of her shorts. My cock hardens further at her surprised little gasp, and I stand up to turn her back to face me.

“Well, that search didn’t reveal anything, but I saw you take the lipsticks and know you concealed them on your tight little body somewhere.”

She gulps, licking her lips and looking at me with her huge eyes.

“Then you’ll simply have to find them,” she dares me.

Lorraine woke up with the same thing on her mind as when she went to sleep—was Noah flirting with her? She didn’t get it. Maybe she misunderstood his comments. He probably just wanted to know if she’d slept on his sheets so he could lie on top of the comforter. Maybe the thought of sleeping on sheets she’d laid on was gross. Besides, Lorraine should have been thinking about her mother. Not Noah.

Today’s plan was to pick out a last outfit for her mother to wear. Mimi gave Norah the option to pick out Brick’s suit, but Norah declined, so when Mimi ran into Noah, she would ask him. He hadn’t resurfaced from his apartment, though, and now Mimi was already at the funeral home making arrangements for tomorrow’s service.

When Lorraine made her final decision—a mint-green silk blouse, a long, pale-grey, belted pleated skirt, and black pointed-toe suede slingback flats—she spread it out on her mother’s bed and snapped a picture of it. She didn’t know why she took the picture, but she did. Then she went downstairs to make a cup of tea. While the kettle warmed up, she pulled up the picture. This is what she’d remember her mother in forever. Was it good enough? Would her mother approve? Before she could finish her thoughts, the back door opened.

Noah nodded, then searched the kitchen. “You have coffee?” he asked, his voice deep and groggy.

“Just wake up?” It was the middle of the day already, and he was still sleeping?

“Had trouble falling asleep. Coffee?”

She pointed to the empty percolator on the counter.

“You don’t have one of those one-cup machines?”

“Nope.”

He picked up the pot and turned it in his hands while he looked at it and frowned. “Do you know how to make it?”

“Nope. I drink tea.”

He made a loud grunting sound, which Lorraine guessed was a sigh. “Is there a deli nearby or a Dunkin’ Donuts?”

“Yeah. Make a left outside the development. There’s a side road on your right that’ll take you right to the shopping center. There’s a deli and a Dunkin’.”

“Want anything?”

“No thanks.”

“Where’s Norah?”

“School. She and Carter wanted to go.”

“Why?”

I shrugged. “Too depressing here? I don’t know.”

He nodded and left. Two minutes later, Lorraine heard his bike come to a roaring start. Oh how she wished she were on the back of it right now. Better yet, she wished she could take it out on her own. She’d never felt anything like what she’d felt last night. The cold wind on her face, the smell of the pavement combined with the smell of the frozen woods, outriding her thoughts.

As Lorraine sipped her tea, the impending sorrow began to settle around her. It didn’t seem real yet—her mother dying—but she knew once it finally hit, she would be lost. She didn’t know if she’d ever come back from the devastation once it sank in. Her mother was her teacher, her confidant, her best friend—her hero. Though Lorraine was only six years old when she watched her father die on the floor in front of her, she could vividly remember her very pregnant mother taking charge of the whole scene.

Tatum Blanchett Mattina Mack was an elementary school teacher, but she commanded respect and authority no matter who was in the room. The day Lorraine’s father died, Tatum stood tall and composed. No tears were shed by her mother that day. Even at the services, Lorraine could recall her mother comforting those who offered their condolences.

“Oh, Gert,” Lorraine remembered her mother speaking to Lorraine’s father’s cousin. “I’m so sorry. I know how much Dominic meant to you.”

Gertrude went on to explain how her cousin Dominic was her favorite cousin, and they were so close, and she didn’t know how she would live without him. Yeah, how she would live without him. How was Lorraine’s pregnant mother going to live without her husband? How would Lorraine live without her father? How would her new baby sibling live without him?

Lorraine was six, but still, she’d thought these things. And she couldn’t understand why her mother didn’t say something along the lines of, “You’re worried about yourself right now?” But no, Lorraine’s mother was selfless and compassionate and thought nothing of putting someone else’s feelings before her own.

Lorraine wasn’t like that. But, right now, she was hoping to imitate her mother’s strength and selflessness. But how could she do that if she let herself feel the imminent pain? How did her mother hide the hurt? Because even though Lorraine was six, she could see it in her mother’s eyes; her mother may have been easing the aches of her consolers, but no one was taking her mother’s suffering away. Yet, her mother smiled through it regardless. Now it was Lorraine’s turn to be the strong one—for Carter, for Norah. But could she? She was having her doubts.

The loud roar of the motorcycle once again invaded her thoughts. Noah. She didn’t know what to think of him or what part he’d play in all this. He’d most likely go back to his college life as if his sister’s life wasn’t just turned upside down. As if all their lives weren’t just shaken up like a broken snow globe, all its pieces floating aimlessly until they landed. The thing was, Lorraine thought, where would they all land?

“Hey.” Noah ambled back in and took a seat at the table. After digging into a brown deli bag, he pulled out a cup of coffee and two packages of Hostess orange cupcakes. “Want one?” he asked, holding up one of the packages.

Lorraine shrugged. She liked orange cupcakes. “Okay.”

Noah slid it across the table, tore open his package, and took a bite so big that half the cupcake was already gone.

“Hungry?”

With a full mouth and a groan, he mumbled, “Mmmm hmm,” and then chased it down with a gulp of coffee.

“So,” Lorraine started, figuring she’d better give him time to find something for his father to wear. “You think you can pick out a suit for your father to wear tomorrow?”

He put down the coffee he was about to sip again and looked at her. “What?”

“My grandmother would like you to pick out a suit. Y’know, for your dad. For the wake.” Lorraine ripped open her package of cupcakes.

“Jesus Christ. No. No, I’m not going to pick out a suit. You do it.”

“Me?” she asked, pausing as the cupcake reached her lips. “Why me?”

He gaped at her. “Why not?”

“Why not?” She put her cupcake down. “Because he’s not my father. He’s yours.”

Noah’s eyes rolled up, he shook his head, and closed his eyelids all at the same time. “I’ve seen him twice in two years. I hardly even talked to him. You want him to look nice, you do it. I’m not picking out a suit.”

Lorraine picked at the orange icing on her cupcake while she contemplated how to respond. “You know,” she said, after a few seconds, “whatever your problems were with Brick, I think you should put them aside for this weekend. This can’t be easy for your sister. I mean, Norah has become a sister to me, but Mimi, she doesn’t come visit much, so I’m sure Norah feels a little uncomfortable around her.” Lorraine paused when she saw Noah close his eyes and shake his head while he let out an exaggerated breath. “I’m serious. She needs you right now to step up and be her big brother. All I’ve seen so far is you being inconvenienced by being here. Grow up, Noah.”

“Gee, thanks, Rain. You put it all in perspective for me.” Noah slapped his forehead. “Picking out a suit will make it all better for Norah. Geez. Why didn’t I think about that?”

“Y’know, Noah. You’re an ass.”

“And you can bite it.”
