Riley gazed at the clock next to her bed for the tenth time in the past twenty minutes. She was mentally exhausted, yet her mind refused to shut down and let her rest. She closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep.
Crreeeak…
She sat up ramrod straight and listened in the darkness. She strained to hear any other sound out of place.
The crickets and frogs chirruped. Off in the distance a red fox cried out—exactly like a woman screaming. Then a scraping sound…so close.
The crickets and frogs abruptly stopped.
She held her breath, one, two, three, heartbeats.
The chirruping returned.
Slipping both legs out from under her covers, she placed her feet on the floor as soundlessly as possible. Slowly shifting her weight, she stood up and tiptoed to the door. She crept out of her room and headed for the stairs where she stopped and listened.
It was a moonless night, and she couldn’t see more than a few feet, but growing up in this house she felt comfortable moving in the near blinding darkness.
She moved onto the first stair and stopped. Making sure of her footing she skipped the next stair knowing it would squeak and gracefully landed on the one below. All the while keeping her hands away from the shaky banister that her dad had promised to fix years ago. She continued down the remining stairs, stepping only on the solid treads. She moved toward the front door. The security system wasn’t active. Had she set it before bed? She couldn’t remember. Cracking the door open she slipped out into the night.
Out of nowhere, a massive hand covered her mouth and an arm wrapped around her waist. She tried to scream, but the man yanked her back and knocked the wind from her lungs.

Grant the mystery man—a delicious mystery Shayla would like to unravel, piece by piece, layer by layer. Ah, but I can’t. I’m his boss. In a different lifetime, if we didn’t have the whole boss-employee obstacle going on…. No harm in looking, though, just a little, since he sat so close. She promised herself to keep her thoughts G-rated—okay, maybe PG-13. Grant had a talent with numbers and paid attention to detail. Also, he was a little shy and standoffish to a lot of people when it came to anything other than work. Shayla wondered where he sometimes went in his head, because, every now and then, his smile slipped from his face, just for a second, before being replaced with one a little harder. None of my business, she reminded herself.
She had really wanted to hug him this morning after seeing him so frustrated but decided it might be wiser and more appropriate to show him there were a few people on his side. Seeing him break things and try to be all strong and humorous about it made Shayla want to unravel the Grant mystery even more. It kind of hurt to watch him pretending to be fine, but all she could offer him was lunch and good conversation. Hopefully, Mr. Strong and Silent—Sydney called him that sometimes, although never to his face—knew Shayla and Sydney cared. And Shayla did care. Because he’s a friend. Just a friend.
Grant raised his soda in a toast. “To things not being worse,” he announced with a rueful half smile. “And, uh”—he cleared his throat—“to good company.” He nodded at Sydney, and when he met Shayla’s gaze, he held it. In his dark eyes, she saw hunger, wide-open desire, and about a million other things she couldn’t puzzle out. Grant looked at her that way sometimes, and she did her best to ignore it. He might have a small crush on her, or he could have a thing for petite, small-breasted girls possessing a great fashion sense.
Sydney broke the silence. “To good food and even better friends.” She clinked Grant’s glass, and Shayla came back to reality and smiled, pretending she wasn’t experiencing several different kinds of inappropriate thoughts and feelings for a sexy, complicated man who was her employee and also her friend. She needed to behave and remember things could never go any further than a panty-melting gaze.

My Review

I haven't read the first book, and I must admit to some confusion when I started reading this book. There are undercurrents beneath the words being said, and I can't help but be intrigued yet confused by the secrets that appeared to have driven the sisters apart six years ago. But as I read on, it became easier to be caught up in the story and the characters, and you can't help but want the villain to be caught and the McKay family to have the happy ending they deserve.
I love each of the sisters--they're individually depicted with their own personalities. I have to applaud the author for being able to give distinctive qualities to her characters and making them stand out in some way. I especially love little Mackenzie! I'm also intrigued by Casey's parents, making me want to go back and read book 1!
Needless to say, I enjoyed this story a lot, especially as I love suspense with my romance. I can't wait to see what else W.L. Brooks has in store for us in future installments!

It was late afternoon by the time Ryan pulled into the lane leading to the old farmhouse. The sky was dark from the storms passing through, only adding to his unease. All the back roads had looked the same to him, so he had stopped at a gas station to make sure he was going the right way.
He pulled into the driveway and waited a few minutes before cutting off the engine. He retrieved his gun from the glove compartment and got out of the car. He closed the door with as much finesse as possible and put the 9 mm in his slacks, so it rested against the small of his back.
The farmhouse was a good size, two stories. He knew it had belonged to J. T. Vaughn, their grandfather. Vaughn had been the father of Emmit McKay’s first wife. The sisters didn’t like talking about her, even amongst themselves, which piqued his curiosity. He had done a bit of research on the matter, but that was neither here nor there at this point.
He edged around the overgrown lawn and headed for the house. He had yet to see any signs of life. There was a shed at the rear of the property, and Ryan decided to try there first.
The grass was thick and damp from the rain. An ominous screech filled the air when he lifted the latch. The scent of oil and rust hit his nostrils as he shone his pocket light into the darkness.

Next morning, I splashed water from a pewter pitcher. The kitchen, on a sunken floor, with a chimney that whisked the smoke at an angle, had a modernized small window reinforced with iron bars and thick glass that opened to let out smoke in emergencies. The only window that wasn’t along the top of the castle.
I prodded around to find the keys. Leaving would be noisy, even if I were strong enough to lift the portcullis. But sometimes he left it up. I was unused to requesting permission to leave. The cupboards built into stone walls had ancient, sturdy locks on them. That must have been where rare spices lived. If I found Dune’s keys to get to the keys and figured out the secret way to use them. Oh, bother.
There, at the kitchen window, inches from my eyes, Colin’s face!
Suede jacket soaked, his sandy hair darkened, flattened against his head, his smooth skin almost translucent in the clustered lightning flashes. I gasped and knocked over a goblet.
Dune called out, “Is everything all right?”
“Just being clumsy me.”
“Did the thunder startle you?”
A storm was blowing over us, the wind hurling the dark clouds along, rain pelting everything, including the unfortunate man.
“Yes. Sorry, just bustling in here.”
Was Colin hungry? Did his wound need tending?
Has he confused me with Miriam because of delusion from hunger? I liked the hungry look in a man, making his cheekbones angular, his abdomen concave, his waist narrow. I gawked as he mouthed something. I feigned overlooking him, that the lighting created a glare on the windows. I continued moving without disrupting my stride, peripheral vision heightened. I warmed when he lay hand over heart and then opened it toward me.
Was Miriam making noises in the corridors? Was she in the room with me?
That’s what he’s seeing! Miriam’s ghost! Haunting me! I spun. I called out her name. “Miriam, give a sign.”
Meanwhile, Colin scratched on the pane.
I scurried around and put tape, gauze, and peroxide in a bag. I put in matches, too, in case he needed to start a fire for warmth, cooking, or sterilization. I threw the bag, missing some feisty shrubbery that would have obscured it from his view. Would he find it? I closed the window and moved away.
I hoped Dune wouldn’t find it or realize it was missing. I’d never get the chance to help Colin again. Colin tapped against the glass, but I didn’t look. It seemed he might have died from infection if he didn’t have some way to treat it. But, now what?
I lifted my chin going about my breakfast preparations, to present to him my most fetching profile, lengthening my neck, and upturning my lips. Two men I found enticing: one inside the fortress, one outside thick stone walls. The electricity could shatter the glass into a million pieces.
I skinned a hare. I put it over the fire to cook with older gorse leaves and a side of fresh gorse salad. Not my typical breakfast. The cooking smell was better than I’d expected. Was I tormenting Colin, cooking while he watched, starving out there?
When Dune came in to eat, Colin ducked down and ran off into the darkness. I moved in front of the window. The windows had numerical symbols I recognized from Luke’s books. I was code breaking.
I jumped, startled by bright light. A loud snap, followed by thunder. “That struck close!” A tree had cracked, falling, hitting other trees, parts of it breaking off. I ran to the window to see if it had landed on Colin. Couldn’t tell.

Fun Facts

Castle Portcullis: You might possibly have heard of the knitting Portcullis Stitch. It’s named after a cleverly deadly protection for the entryway of a castle.
Portcullises are long wooden spikes plated with iron as a vertically-opening gate operated by pullies. Attackers can be trapped as they walk into the entry if there are double portcullis grids. The internal spikes can descend first, and when the enemy turn to flee, the external portcullis drops.
While the people are caught between the portcullises, the “murder hole” above them can open and flaming logs, sand, boiling oil and so forth can be thrown down upon them.
Double portcullises make for dramatic scenes in Encore, as the castle where Miriam, believing she is Susan, is abducted to keeps her intensely isolated and thus vulnerable and easily manipulated, which is a trope in Gothic fiction, as is mistaken identity.
