Excerpt From the Book

Her face haunted me. The adorable dimple pitted in her cheek caught my eye first. Sexy full lips that folded into a gorgeous smile just about took my breath away. I did my best not to continuously stare at her, managing to throw just a few glances here and there hoping she got the message. But she didn't take the bait. Instead, she gave me a 'too good for you' glance while she plowed down a server on her way to the bathroom, probably to restock the toilet paper in her bra.

The Texas Tease, I called it. Lots of girls at UT had it—this one in particular—in spades. Shorter than my normal tastes, her alluring doe-eyes caught me off guard. The memory of her petite frame sashaying as she worked those sexy, black pumps played on a loop in my head. Along with the way her long, brown hair bounced with every step like a damn shampoo commercial.

She drove me insane, and I didn't even know her name. At least Mick confirmed she was a student at UT, apparently in one of his Economics classes.

She intrigued me, sitting in a sports bar drinking beer while her prissy friend sipped wine. I even caught her glancing at the Longhorn game on the big screen. A cute girl who likes beer and football? Every guy's dream. If only she weren't a snob. But, I'd put her in her place. And I had the perfect plan.

The ring of my Skype alert disrupted my plotting. Incoming message from Kanti, my best friend.

Kanti: Hey …

Me: What's up, brat?

Kanti: You busy?

Me: Never too busy for you.

Kanti: Stop with the sugar, you're giving me diabetes.

Me: LOL Better get used to it.

Kanti: Ugh. Don't remind me. Quick, what do you want for your birthday? You got the new Mortal Kombat release already?

Me: Yeah, of course I do. But you don't have to get me anything. You know that.

Kanti: I can't NOT get you anything.

Me: Tell me you talked to your parents and the wedding's called off. That would be an awesome present.

Kanti: Seriously? You know that isn't even in the realm of possibilities. So shut it.

Me: I can dream, can't I?

Kanti: Yeah, and I know what you do in those dreams. Not even going there.

Me: You're such a bitch. Why do I love you?

Kanti: Because we're best friends.

Me: Well, there's that.

Mick yelled through the door. “Jai, you comin' down or what?”

“In a minute,” I replied.

Me: I gotta go. Kegger tonight and we're hosting.

Kanti: Email me and let me know what to get you.

Me: Fine.

Kanti: LOL Kiss Kiss

Me: Whatever. LOL TTYL

I closed the lid on my laptop as Mick flung the door open.

“People are starting to arrive. You're on keg duty first.”

I tossed him a nod. “Yeah, I know. I'm coming. Just finishing up some notes on my Sociology project.”

“I thought you dropped that class?” He folded his arms, leaning against the door-frame.

“I was going to until Professor Wilkinson agreed to let me take it online, since it's the same time as my cinematography course.” I pulled out a notepad. “What'd you say that chick's name was again? The one we saw at the bar today.”

“Catherine Marek. But I think she goes by Cat.” Mick shrugged. “Why? I thought you said she was a snob, and you weren't gonna pursue her?”

“Oh, I'm not. I got my sights set on another girl I've been talking to for a little while. But I think that Cat chick will make for a perfect target on my sociology paper.” I wrote down her name and underlined it five times. “I'm calling it, Friend Zoned.”

Mick laughed. “Oh, this ought to be good. What're you gonna do?”

“It's what I'm not gonna do that's going be the best part. I'm going to act like I'm interested, then when she takes the bait, I'll friend zone her. I'm going to prove that a guy can be sexually attracted to a girl who's interested in him and still remain only friends. I'll be the best 'friend' she's ever gonna have.”

It took some time for Craig to find his way around Reid Park, but he eventually found the Desert Sunrise alumni picnic. He casually strolled around, pretending to be just another park visitor on a balmy Saturday morning. Before long, a bench near the playground opened up. He took a seat and watched the people go by. The picnic had a good turnout, but so far he hadn’t spotted Rachel among the crowd. He checked his watch. It was half past eleven. The picnic was supposed to last until two, so perhaps she hadn’t arrived yet. He reached for his phone and checked his messages as he watched the caterers set up.

The scent of grilling hamburgers and hot dogs soon filled the air. His mouth watered and he made a mental note to grab a burger on his way back to the hotel. He leaned back on the bench and kept a close watch on the crowd, but still no sign of Rachel or Bill, her companion from the night before. People soon lined up for lunch, and he waited patiently as the crowd worked its way through. He checked his watch once the last person was served. It was nearly one o’clock and the games were starting, although a few late arrivals were still showing up. He remained on the bench until the caterers started breaking down, then he slowly rose to his feet and brushed himself off. Part of him was disappointed she hadn’t shown up, but the rest of him felt elated. He had succeeded in scaring her off. He smiled to himself as he strolled back to his car.

About Marina Martindale

Just like Gillian Matthews, the heroine in her debut romance novel, The Reunion, Marina Martindale began her career as a graphic designer and artist, and several of her paintings have been featured in juried art shows. Over time, however, she discovered writing was her true life’s passion.

As eldest son, Eoin O’Brien is expected to take over the management of his family pub, the Lion O’Brien in the Bronx. Excerpt

“Mark, can you check the store?” my manager asks me. “A load of teenagers have just come in and I don’t like the look of them. Light-fingered bunch, the lot of them. Can you stroll down the aisles?” 

Jeez. The man sees a potential thief in everyone and I roll my eyes behind his back. I’ve been a store detective for a week and think the job sucks. Nothing interesting ever happens apart from inside this man’s head, and if it does, I really don’t give a fuck. What do I care if some kids nick a few beers? For the money I’m earning, it’s really no skin off my nose. Good luck to ’em. 

I leave the office and go down the first aisle. As predicted, fuck-all happening, and I’m tempted to go home early. The boss goes home in five anyway. I round an aisle and stop. A cute little blonde has just stuffed two lipsticks into her shirt. I watch mesmerized as she then sashays out of the store in a pair of tight little shorts. I grin. Things have become interesting all of a sudden. 

I follow her out of the store and put a hand on her shoulder. “Would you like to come back into the store with me, Miss? I believe you have something that’s not yours.” 

I feel her jump guiltily before she slowly turns around. She looks up at me all awkward and embarrassed. I can’t believe my luck. Up close, I think she’s breath-taking. Her pixie face is tanned, clear skinned and free of makeup, which I like. Her huge green eyes draw me in and I like the look of guilt in them. Her body is well-toned and displayed for my pleasure in a pair of light pink shorts and short-sleeved shirt. I can’t wait to get her alone in the office and teach her the error of her ways! And she definitely needs it. 

The girl follows me reluctantly back into the store. I take her to the far end and into a room. I can’t wait to start questioning her. This is going to be fun, and I’m going to behave totally inappropriately toward her, which will probably get me fired at the end of the day. But if it means tasting this sweet little thing, I think

I can manage without the crap pay check. 

I shut the door with a loud click and the girl jumps nervously. I think it’s cute how she chews nervously on her lower lip. Pretty soon, I’ll be biting that lip. 

“I believe you’ve taken something from the store that doesn’t belong to you, Miss,” I say sternly, waiting for her to admit to her guilt. 

She looks up at me. 

“I haven’t taken anything.” Her breathless voice makes me hard as nails. “You must have made a mistake.” 

I study her for a few minutes to make her squirm in the heavy silence. 

“It’s going to be like that, is it?” I drawl. “In which case, I’m going to have to frisk you.” 

I walk forward before she can blink an eye, turn her around, place her hands above her head, flat palmed against the door, and I nudge her legs slightly apart. Then I totally break the rules by running my hands down her body, patting her down, pretending to look for the lipsticks when I know she’s stuffed them down her bra all along. 

“Hey!” she squeaks. “I don’t think you can do this to me.” 

“Hush, sweet cheeks,” I whisper near her ear and feel her shiver at my close proximity. “I can do what I like to girls who misbehave. Where’ve you hidden them, darlin’?” 

The girl draws in a breath as my hands lightly run down her arms, over her chest and breasts, where they linger, only to squeeze the mounds and rub her nipples into hard peaks, before continuing down her body. 

“I really don’t think you have any right to touch me like this.” It comes out a gasp, but she’s leaning into my touch. 

“Did you hide them in your shorts?” I rasp as I run my hands over her bum in the tight, tiny shorts, cupping the cheeks and squeezing them. I can’t help myself. 

Then my hand sneaks around the front and rubs her mound through the thin material of her shorts. My cock hardens further at her surprised little gasp, and I stand up to turn her back to face me.
