Book Review
Rating: 5 Stars
Wow! This is quite an explosive book! Certainly no dull moments for me and even has its own "page turner" moments on more than a few occasion.
To commend the author, the story is well written (there were a few errors/mistakes here and there, but it was not a lot). The story starts off with a simple, initial viewpoint -- that of Gideon, a young innocent 12-year old boy finding himself captive to two scary adults and witnessing his entire city decimated. From this point, the author slowly but expertly unravels a complex plot -- together with an overarching mystery -- as the story progresses. This kept me very much interested in the story, as each new chapter would have me anticipate for some new development.
Although I enjoyed Gideon's character, I was hoping his character could progress more from his initial innocent state. There was a little semblance of this growth, although I felt he was still being portrayed as "confused" and in a discovery stage even towards the latter portion of the book. Well, there is a sequel, so i won't discount this out yet.
Perhaps the most mysterious character for me is Albion. I'm not sure where to put him as there seems to be something more than meets the eye about him. Perhaps what added to his mysterious aura was the way he speaks, often referencing to an uncertain future that doesn't seem to be uncertain at all for him, to which he'd refer to as "destiny". This was made even more confusing by the plot twist on the latter portion of the book. Another good strategy to have the reader interested to pick up its sequel.
While there is absolutely 0 romance in this book, Gideon and the Crimson Samurai is a colorful tale of multiple people with multiple personalities, a tale of bonding, and friendship. I would not hesitate to recommend this to someone looking for a light, yet action-packed book.
