My Review

Rating: 5 stars
The Priestesses of Levet provides an awesome mystery--just who are killing the priestesses and why? Jason and Mortyiene are the investigators of the Library, and since the priestesses are killed in the new rooms of the Library, they're called in to investigate. As the mystery evolves, it seems the villain has a personal grudge against Jason. Just who is doing this? And why priestesses?
Victoria Lynn Osborne creates an awesome world where the Library creates new rooms in response to needs. Wow, imagine that! Her amazing world is full of magic and enchanters, sorcerers and necromancers, and dragons. Yet, there's also a logical system in place, like we see a trial toward the end, such as what you'd see in legal dramas. Her writing is sparse and leaves you to fill in the blanks with your imagination, but she gives enough narration to guide readers.
Toward the end, we even have a surprising twist that takes this book to a whole new level. Though I enjoyed this book, I think it would've been more enjoyable if I'd read the first two books.

Excerpt

When Angie went back to her room she took a couple of bottled waters so she wouldn’t have to go hunting in the night.
Batiste hadn’t returned from whatever biker intrigue was occupying his time.
She supposed she was fortunate to have a room with an adjoining three quarter bath. She took a shower and towel dried her hair, but left it damp. She’d sleep cooler that way. Around eleven she turned off the lights, crawled on top of the cotton sheets and lay still listening to the night sounds of the swamp. After a few minutes a light rain added its voice to the lullaby of crickets, cicadas, and frogs and she felt herself drifting.
She was dosing when the door opened and someone came in. As she was sitting up, she heard Batiste and, was that nails on the floor?
“No worry, cher. It’s me. And dogs.”
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Takin’ care of you.”
Her eyes had adjusted to the low light so that she could see he was spreading a sleeping bag on the floor.
“You’re not sleeping on a wood floor.”
“Looks like I am.”
“You’re taking this protection thing kind of seriously.”
She heard the rustle of nylon as he lay down on top of the sleeping bag, but he didn’t answer. There was no more to say about that. Nothing was more serious than keeping Rou’s girl safe. He had two dogs trained by the SSMC, worth a fortune, and a loaded nine millimeter pistol loaded within easy reach. That, and the fact that he wasn’t likely to sleep too soundly on that floor, meant the woman couldn’t be safer if she was locked in Fort Knox.
It was hard knowing she was close enough to reach out and touch, but it was also the easiest feeling in the world, knowing she was close enough to reach out and touch. If he was sappy, he might have said it felt meant to be. He wasn’t sappy. Not at all.
At least that’s what he told himself as he robotically stroked Belle’s fur and stared toward the ceiling. The sound of the rain was comforting. Partly because that’s rain’s gift and partly because villains rarely get up to mischief in the rain. Maybe, he mused, they’re like that old wicked witch in Oz and don’t like getting wet.

Book Review

Rating: 5 Stars
Wow! This is quite an explosive book! Certainly no dull moments for me and even has its own "page turner" moments on more than a few occasion.
To commend the author, the story is well written (there were a few errors/mistakes here and there, but it was not a lot). The story starts off with a simple, initial viewpoint -- that of Gideon, a young innocent 12-year old boy finding himself captive to two scary adults and witnessing his entire city decimated. From this point, the author slowly but expertly unravels a complex plot -- together with an overarching mystery -- as the story progresses. This kept me very much interested in the story, as each new chapter would have me anticipate for some new development.
Although I enjoyed Gideon's character, I was hoping his character could progress more from his initial innocent state. There was a little semblance of this growth, although I felt he was still being portrayed as "confused" and in a discovery stage even towards the latter portion of the book. Well, there is a sequel, so i won't discount this out yet.
Perhaps the most mysterious character for me is Albion. I'm not sure where to put him as there seems to be something more than meets the eye about him. Perhaps what added to his mysterious aura was the way he speaks, often referencing to an uncertain future that doesn't seem to be uncertain at all for him, to which he'd refer to as "destiny". This was made even more confusing by the plot twist on the latter portion of the book. Another good strategy to have the reader interested to pick up its sequel.
While there is absolutely 0 romance in this book, Gideon and the Crimson Samurai is a colorful tale of multiple people with multiple personalities, a tale of bonding, and friendship. I would not hesitate to recommend this to someone looking for a light, yet action-packed book.

No one would understand that my submission empowered me, that I felt stronger kneeling at Gabriel’s feet than I ever had standing at Paul’s side.
Faye Austin seems to have it all--a fulfilling career, a successful husband, a beautiful home. But appearances can be deceptive and sometimes Faye can’t help thinking she’s living the wrong life. A lifetime of being compared to her beautiful younger sister, Ginny, has left her feeling second best, and a chance discovery while looking at her husband’s laptop has led her to realize that her marriage is not all it seems.
Then she meets the handsome Gabriel Scott, a man who likes to play sexual games of power and control, and suddenly everything makes sense. Gabriel’s natural dominance is so compelling that Faye feels her own submissiveness awakening in response, a reaction that both horrifies and excites her. She works with victims of domestic abuse and is adamant that no man will ever tell her what to do. But there’s something about Gabriel that draws her in and gives her a glimpse of who she really wants to be.
Can Gabriel give her what she needs? Or will Ginny get there first?

My Review

Rating: 4 Stars
A Fine Line is a well-written story on BDSM. It's perfect for a beginner reader, as this is actually my first BDSM read and I find it entertaining and enjoyable. The story flows well, with realistic conflicts, and the pacing was good. There was even a little suspense with regard to Faye's work (she helps and advises women in domestic abuse situations), and I enjoyed that little twist. There are lots of sex scenes, though, and each one has a purpose, so I can't say they are gratuitous, but there are lots of them, more than I'm used to, actually.
That said, there is romance between Gabriel and Faye. You can see it in some of their interactions, and while Faye is a submissive, she's not a pushover. For important things, she's not afraid to speak her mind with Gabriel and would even insist on her way. I think it's great too that while Gabriel is a dominant, he's reasonable and would allow Faye on the things that matter to her. I'm not really in the BDSM scene and I'm not fully cognizant of how BDSM works, so while Faye may like some of the things Gabriel said and did to her (as a Dom, he said he needs to take care of her), I didn't fully like it. For example, once Gabriel referred to her as his possession, that he needs/likes to take care of his possessions. Oooo-kay.
Lastly, a note of warning to readers who dislike cheating. There's cheating in this book, so read at your own risk.

My Review

Rating: 5 Stars
Untamed Hearts compelled my attention from the first scene, as we are left with a mystery--why did Jared escape from prison? What was he in prison for? I just couldn't help but flip the pages to know why. Then there's Taryn Ashford, such a sweet miss itching for independence. She's affianced, but she knew if she didn't set out to visit her relatives now, she'd never get the chance to do so. She never knew she'd end up playing the wife to Jared King, to help him avoid the detection and capture of the authorities. Where would their relationship lead her?
Jared and Taryn are great together, and their chemistry sizzles. Aunt Gwen is a wonderful secondary character; I can totally see her in my mind. Etta Briggs, a woman Taryn met on the train west, is amazing as well.
Colleen O'Connell employed vivid and detailed descriptions that we are able to picture the setting perfectly, even if it's just the train that the main characters rode in to Sacramento. I really enjoyed it! It's as if I'm right in the story and right in the midst of a Western setting!
The story is so much more than what is written on the blurb. There are surprising revelations, though perhaps I should've seen it coming, and a totally twisty, delightful resolution. The shifting POV's didn't bother me much, because it's usually a lot of paragraphs before the POV shifted to another character, so it's not confusing in whose POV we are.
All in all, a super great read! Highly recommended!

Excerpt

Terry Haggerty was no pushover. She had gone to work at sixteen to save money for college, which is where she met Rook. Before the kids came, they'd often spent weekends at campsites throughout the region. Rook was an avid fisherman and hunter, and although she hadn't had any familiarity with firearms before she met him, Terry now owned two or three guns and was proud of her ability to shoot.
Under Rook’s tutelage, Terry always made sure her guns were in excellent condition. She went now to the gun cabinet in the living room. She kept most of her attention on the sounds from the back porch. From the cabinet she took out her .22 pistol and loaded it. Then she stuck it into the waist of her jeans, and pulled her shirt out to hide it.
She went into the kitchen. She paused at the door to the back porch and drew a breath. Someone out there swore quietly, and there was the tinkle of glass.
Enough, she thought, and opened the door.
Grant White and Rick Carrington stood in the dusk outside. They looked in at her with dull surprise on their faces. She relaxed. She knew them well. They were friends of her late son, Loren, even though they'd been a year ahead of him at school. But what the devil were they up to?
"Hi, guys," she said. "Que pasa?"
Rick snarled in response, and her hackles rose as she realized they were both filthy, covered with mud and dried blood. Something was very wrong here. She pulled the gun out of her waistband. "Just stop right there," she said, pointing it at Rick, who stood slightly in front of Grant at the broken window.
Rick snarled again, but Grant laid an arm on his shoulder. "Hi, Ms. Haggerty," he said in an oily voice. Her hackles rose even further at the sound of it. "We were just wondering where Greg was."
"He's upstairs having a nap."
Grant grinned in a particularly nasty way. She'd never seen such a feral expression on anyone's face. "Oh, I don't think he is," he said. "I think maybe he's out looking for... Jessa."
Unconsciously she took a step or two toward the boys at the window. Their eyes... she leaned forward for a better look.
Rick's arm snaked out faster than she would have believed and seized her sleeve. Terry staggered back and broke free. Rick shrieked wordlessly at her, a sound that didn’t sound as though it could have come from a human throat. Grant shoved him aside and tried to force himself through the broken window. She watched in horror as the glass gashed his flesh. He ignored it. Terry realized she was in mortal danger. She raised her gun and discharged it into his face. He slumped forward without a word. Though her ears rang from the shot, she heard the thud thud thud of Rick Carrington’s feet as he fled into the woods.

Three destinies, one remarkable painting.
Will her visions lead her to the truth?
Art historian Angela Renatus is haunted by dreams of Leonardo da Vinci and a mysterious painting of Giuliano Medici and his mistress Fioretta Gorini. A painting that, as far as the world knows, doesn’t exist. Compelled by her visions, Angela is determined to find out the truth.
When Angela is contacted by art detective, Alex Caine, she’s shocked to learn that he too is seeking the same painting. Alex’s client, a wealthy German financier, is determined to clear the name of his late uncle, Gerard Jaeger, an art historian, who went missing in Florence, during World War II. In letters written before his disappearance, the historian describes his love affair with a beautiful young Italian woman named Sophia Caro, and the discovery of an extraordinary painting by the great master himself—a painting depicting Giuliano and Fioretta.
Alex and Angela journey to Florence in search of the priceless treasure. Is it a lost da Vinci, potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars, or a wild goose-chase that will only lead to a dead end? But someone else is searching for the illusive painting—Alberto Scordato is a powerful man in the art world and a sociopath who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, even murder. Scordato knows something about Angela that even she doesn’t know, something that could threaten both Angela and Alex’s lives, forcing them into the crosshairs of fate.

It’s her.
Alex almost choked on his martini when he saw the young woman’s reflection in the mirror. He swiveled on his barstool, his heart pounding in his chest and stared, unable to believe his own eyes. Angela Renatus and the girl in front of the painting who’d kissed him so passionately are one and the same.
Alex had managed to grab two seats at the bar of Bistro Prossima Volta—one of the hottest spots in LA. The place was packed. The hipsters who flocked there during the dinner rush, crowded around the ornate mahogany bar, drinking and sampling a vast array of Italian antipasti.
Setting his briefcase on the second stool, he’d ignored the angry glances and ordered a dry martini. He sipped while keeping his eyes locked on the Italian mirror stretching along the wall across from him. He could see the reflection of the restaurant’s entrance and everyone who walked in. Angela had texted him that she was running late. She hadn’t given him a description and he’d neglected to ask. Odd. Alex never forgot to ask. His entire career involved just those kinds of details. And then she walked in. And he knew. He knew it was her.
Her dark hair, secured in an elegant bun, enhanced those movie-star cheekbones. Her brown velvet eyes, framed by the black-rimmed glasses, were a striking contrast to her lush, ruby-red lips. Wearing a crisp, white blouse and a gray, pencil skirt, she paused as she scanned the restaurant, unaware of every male head swiveling to get an eyeful. Damn! He wasn’t the only guy attracted by the hot librarian look. He recalled the temptress who’d kissed him with wild abandon and shifted on his stool. He couldn’t reconcile her disparate behavior. It was as if she were two different women.
When their eyes locked in the mirror, he was surprised to see no reaction or recognition. His pulse quickened. How can she not know me?
She glanced down at her watch.
This wasn’t at all what he’d expected. Embarrassment, yes, confusion and accusations, not this total obliviousness of the erotic passion that had consumed them.
He stood and called out to her. “Angela, Alex Caine.”
She maneuvered through the crowd. “How did you know it was me? I think I forgot to give you a description.”
“Just a guess.”
“Do you prefer Alex or Alexander?
“Everyone calls me Alex,” he said with a grin, offering her his hand.
Angela smiled and took it. “It’s good to meet you.”
Double damn! Gorgeous smile, with a sexy dimple in her left cheek. The touch of her hand sent a jolt through him. Her eyes widened slightly, her hand trembled in his.
“That’s weird,” she whispered, as though to herself.
“What’s weird?” he asked, feigning ignorance. Does she feel it too?
She shook her head, a laugh escaping her. “Sorry, it’s been a long day. It’ll be good to relax. I’m glad you called. Professor Hoffman is one of my dearest friends and my mentor.”
Alex lifted the briefcase and stowed it at his feet, gesturing her to sit. “I’ve known Michael for years. He’s been very supportive of my work.”
She nodded and sat. “Michael is a vault of knowledge and always willing to help.”
Her gaze was direct, but without any recognition that they’d made out a few hours earlier in front of the Botticelli painting. How the hell do you kiss someone like that and not remember?
Her brows knitted as she continued to look at him.
He laughed. “Is there something on my face.”
“Forgive me.” A rosy hue colored her cheeks. “It’s your eyes. They’re so unusual.”
He sat back and scratched his cheek. “Yeah, I get that a lot.” His left eye was pale blue, the right was hazel. “You can blame my parents for the odd combo. Although, no one else in my family has two, different-colored eyes.”
The bartender approached them. “Angela, the usual?”
Her eyes remained locked on his. And she failed to reply to the bartender. Something flickered in her gaze. Not recognition. But something deep. Intense. He suddenly wished they were back at the Getty, sitting in front of the painting, not in a noisy, packed restaurant.
“Hey, Angela,” the bartender repeated. “Do you want the usual?”
Her expression cleared and she glanced up at the bartender. “Sorry, Tim. Yes, please, that would be great. Oh, and some of those yummy meatballs.”
“I’ll have the meatballs, too. And put it on my tab.”
“Got it, man.”
“I can’t let you do that,” she protested.
“Don’t be ridiculous. I called you.” He grinned. “Besides, I’m the one with an expense account.”
She shook her head and chuckled. “I definitely don’t have one of those.”
Alex took a sip of his martini. He couldn’t get past her lack of recognition. He needed to test her, to see whether this act of hers was for real. “Besides trying to convince you to work on this case with me, I’m here on business. In fact, I had a meeting with the director of the Getty today.”
Her eyes widened. “You knew I worked at the Getty, why didn’t you tell me you were planning on being there? We could have grabbed a coffee.”
“I didn’t want to bother you at work. Seeing the Getty was a pleasure, but a brief cup of coffee wouldn’t be enough time for me to get to know you or learn much about your expertise.” Alex had spent years studying body language and facial expressions. He knew when someone was telling the truth or evading it. She genuinely seemed surprised. Which made this mystery all the more strange.
The bartender placed a white sangria in front of her. “Cheers.” She clinked her glass to his and took a sip. “How did your meeting with the director go?”
“Don’t take any offense, but let’s just say I’m not a fan of the guy.”
She nodded, her eyes glancing down at her drink.
“Correct me if I’m wrong but you don’t seem thrilled with him either.”
She took another sip. “I’m having some issues with him.”
He didn’t press her on the director issues. His focus was still on their unforgettable kiss at the museum. “You know, I have this strange feeling that I saw you today.”
She lifted her elegant eyebrows. “You did?”
“Yeah, at the Getty.”
“No, that’s unlikely. I rarely leave my desk at the research center.” She shook her head and a strand of hair came loose. He began to lift his hand, wanting to tuck her hair behind her ear, but caught himself just in time and reached for his drink instead. He needed to unravel the mystery of why Angela had no recollection of what had happened earlier in the day. This woman is either a really good liar, or she’s sleepwalking.

An Interview with Tanith Davenport

We recently sat down with Tanith Davenport, author of Watch the Skies, to talk about her latest release and more!
  1. Please tell us something unique about you that we can’t learn from your bio.
Even though I don't write horror, I'm an avid viewer of horror movies. I'm always open to watching a good horror (and occasionally some really bad horror too).
  2. What’s your favorite part of writing?
The planning - that gives me the chance to let my imagination run riot creating characters and settings. That said, I also love writing dialogue for my characters. They'll often say things I had no idea they would say.
  3. What is it about writing science fiction romance, specifically aliens, that draw you?
I think it's the freedom to allow anything to happen. Aliens are something we all know about and yet, in reality, we know very little about. What would they want, if they contacted us?
  4. Do tell us about Alien hunter Aster. What kind of person is she?
Aster has always been fascinated by the possibility of aliens and is determined to make contact. She considers herself an alpha female in her relationships and, as a result, some men are intimidated by her.
  5. How about Wade? What does Aster see in him?
While Aster likes to take charge in her relationships, she likes men who will stand up to her. Wade's strength and intelligence draw her to him even as his attitude drives her mad.
  6. What stories do you have in the works right now?
Right now I'm working on a sequel to my novellas "I Heard Your Voice" and "Tamar Rising", as well as a longer piece set on the Amalfi coast under the working title of "Cooler Than Me". I hope to have them finished by the end of the year.
