Excerpt

In the last moments of her run, the voices around her as well as the clamor of sirens and car horns faded. Because she saw only the man outside the walkway, and his presence muffled everything else. Her lungs burned now and a slight, pleasant asphyxia blurred her senses. Finally at the barricade, she perceived – in addition to Aiden’s figure before her – her own breath and heartbeat, then his, but no other sight or sound.
She didn’t remember climbing through the mesh… but she must have because Aiden had her crushed against him. She heard the loud click of a gun being cocked, and dimly registered the shouted warnings from police to stay back.
Aiden’s smile reflected pure, uncomplicated joy, however. He set her down and cradled her face in his hands. “God. It’s so good to see you, Maya.”
He was happy? Sweet heaven, so was she. An easy lightness blossomed in her chest, expanding like a balloon that threatened to lift her bodily from where she stood. In the ensuing contentment that took her over, she realized again how careworn she’d become, how small her definition of happiness had shrunk since her days in Griffins Bay, especially this past year. She smiled openly in response to him, indifferent to the context of their reunion and their precarious perch on the lip of the bridge.
Aiden stared at her intently, kindly. This will be okay, he assured her. And of course they would be okay – they were together. He then tucked her forehead into his neck, wrapped her tightly against him, and leaned toward the water.

Excerpt

Grant the mystery man—a delicious mystery Shayla would like to unravel, piece by piece, layer by layer. Ah, but I can’t. I’m his boss. In a different lifetime, if we didn’t have the whole boss-employee obstacle going on…. No harm in looking, though, just a little, since he sat so close. She promised herself to keep her thoughts G-rated—okay, maybe PG-13. Grant had a talent with numbers and paid attention to detail. Also, he was a little shy and standoffish to a lot of people when it came to anything other than work. Shayla wondered where he sometimes went in his head, because, every now and then, his smile slipped from his face, just for a second, before being replaced with one a little harder. None of my business, she reminded herself.
She had really wanted to hug him this morning after seeing him so frustrated but decided it might be wiser and more appropriate to show him there were a few people on his side. Seeing him break things and try to be all strong and humorous about it made Shayla want to unravel the Grant mystery even more. It kind of hurt to watch him pretending to be fine, but all she could offer him was lunch and good conversation. Hopefully, Mr. Strong and Silent—Sydney called him that sometimes, although never to his face—knew Shayla and Sydney cared. And Shayla did care. Because he’s a friend. Just a friend.
Grant raised his soda in a toast. “To things not being worse,” he announced with a rueful half smile. “And, uh”—he cleared his throat—“to good company.” He nodded at Sydney, and when he met Shayla’s gaze, he held it. In his dark eyes, she saw hunger, wide-open desire, and about a million other things she couldn’t puzzle out. Grant looked at her that way sometimes, and she did her best to ignore it. He might have a small crush on her, or he could have a thing for petite, small-breasted girls possessing a great fashion sense.
Sydney broke the silence. “To good food and even better friends.” She clinked Grant’s glass, and Shayla came back to reality and smiled, pretending she wasn’t experiencing several different kinds of inappropriate thoughts and feelings for a sexy, complicated man who was her employee and also her friend. She needed to behave and remember things could never go any further than a panty-melting gaze.

As Týr jogged down to the ground floor, Hedori acknowledged him with a nod, and the ice queen who’d reigned during the reception and tacitly ignored his provocations turned, too. Her hazel-green eyes flared in irritation, the color a startling contrast to her luscious, creamy-latte skin.
“Sire, we have a bit of a situation,” Hedori said. “With the fae here, and guests still about, I cannot leave the castle just yet. Would you take Kira home?”
“No-no, Heds,” she quickly countered. “I’ll wait for you.”
He should leave, walk out. Aethan or another could take her, but Týr couldn’t resist. “Ah, Fluff, you wound me. Truly.”
Her head snapped his way. “Yes…maybe, if I thought for one second there was a heart or soul buried somewhere deep down under that shell,” she said sweetly, tone spiked with venom. She faced Hedori again, sweet as treacle. “How long do you think you’ll be?”
Hiding his amusement, Týr sighed loudly as if put out. “C’mon, Fluff, let’s get you home.”
She pivoted so fast, fingers fisting as if she wanted to punch him. “Call me that again, and I swear, I’ll—” She broke off, her expression tightening as softer footsteps echoed. Lila Smith, their Oracle and the she-devil’s grandmother, rounded the staircase a moment later.
Hedori nodded to them and departed.
“Thank goodness you’re still here, Kira dear,” Lila breathed. “Would you— Oh, hello, Warrior,” she greeted him softly with a regal incline of her gray-haired head.
Lila usually treated the Guardians injured by those annoying demon bolts with her miracle potions and salves since they couldn’t self-heal that crap fast enough. More annoying, those open wounds acted like a damn tracking device for the hellscums.
“Oracle,” he returned politely.
Lila glanced back at Kira. “I have to go to Seattle for a few days. The coven has a problem and needs my help. It would ease my mind if you stayed here at the castle until my return.”
“Gran, I don’t know why you worry so much. It’s not the first time I’ve been alone. Besides, I have to go to work. I’ll be okay, really.”
Týr could sense the Oracle’s growing anxiety, though her expression remained serene. It could only mean that whatever had gotten her so worked up was serious. Michael should talk to her. Better if the Guardians knew what trouble was stirring.
Lila glanced at him. “Warrior? Would you—?”
“Gran, no!”
Her horrified yell had Týr narrowing his eyes. He’d be the first to admit that he wasn’t fit company for females to be around for any length of time, but she and the Oracle were under Michael’s protection, and by default, the Guardians’, too.
And he took his damn job seriously.
“It would be my absolute pleasure,” he overrode Kira’s protest with as much sincerity as he could dredge up.
If it were anyone else they would have undoubtedly stepped back at her death glare.
But his own perverse nature when it came to her wouldn’t let him back down. He merely quirked an eyebrow, enjoying her flush of frustration, and sent a quick telepathic message to Aethan. Babysit Ely tonight. Have to do a favor for the Oracle.
Would that have anything to do with a certain bridesmaid who wants to leave immediately? the Empyrean shot back, laughter echoing through their mental connection.
Damn smug bastard. As if he needed another funny-man around. Týr shut off their mind-link with a hard slam.
“Are you leaving also?” Týr asked the Oracle, suspending his silent stand-off with Kira.
“Yes, if you wouldn’t mind, Warrior.”
“Not at all.” He crossed to the enormous front door, opened it, and stood back.
“I’ll go get my coat.” Lila hurried off.
Kira stomped past him with no outdoor wear or scarf. Hell, he’d never known lush lips could thin so much. Týr followed her out into the freezing weather. “Where’s your jacket?”
“I’m hot.”
“Yeah, you are,” he muttered under his breath.
Her head snapped to him, eyes flashing in suspicion.
He cast her an innocent stare.
Scowling, she went back to slaying the trees with her glower.
He shook his head wryly. It must be the drugged air from so many flowers in the castle responsible for him uttering that provocative nonsense.

Eye of the Eagle Teaser

Excerpt

Washington, D.C.
Homeland Security Headquarters
Bert Blackfeather stared at the email on his screen, re-read it for the tenth time, and shook his head in disbelief. A political appointee—a woman with absolutely no background in Homeland Security or any other intelligence matters—was now his new boss, the Under Secretary for Management. Unbelievable. Third in command of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), assistant and advisor to the Secretary and Under Secretary on all administrative, financial, and personnel matters—and not a blessed thing in her bio indicated she was fit for the position—except the fact that her mother was the highest-ranking member of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Not that he disliked Senator Ruth Wagner. She asked good questions, some so penetrating he wondered if she had a few psychic powers of her own. Her willingness to reach across the aisle and her impeccable integrity meant she accomplished more than many of her male colleagues who had served in the role. Senator Wagner’s husband, a member of the senior leadership team of the U.S. State Department, had died in a mysterious boating accident on the Chesapeake Bay. His unoccupied twenty-two-foot power boat had run aground on Tilghman Island, and the Coast Guard recovered his body two days later. The Medical Examiner said he died from drowning in brackish water, combined with hypothermia. Arguing that the bay was salt, not fresh or brackish water, rumor had it the senator had demanded the case be reopened, but neither the Talbot County Police, the Maryland State Police, nor a private investigator could find evidence of wrongful death. Case closed, Ruth Wagner soldiered on, raising her daughter on her own, without the live-in help she could have well afforded. If Senator Wagner had been the political appointee, he would have been fine with the placement. But accept her unqualified daughter as his equal, much less his superior?
Never.
The previous Under Secretary’s management style had been much more hands off, seldom interfering with his division—unless he ran over budget. This one, on the other hand—can you say micro-manager? Already, without even asking him if he wanted to do it, with not so much as an email, the new Under Secretary had appointed him to the intra-agency and inter-agency committee to combat human trafficking, the Blue Campaign.
He had attended one session in person and found nothing of substantive value for him to contribute or learn. Besides, he had no desire to sit in face-to-face meetings while his wet-behind-the-ears boss sat with the head honchos in the enormous meeting room. In this case, maintaining a low profile was his best strategy. Rather than wasting his time watching the other directors and assistant directors vie for her attention, he chose to attend the monthly meeting by conference call.
At least that way, he could get some work done and say “Bert Blackfeather, Director of the Anomaly Defense Division” when the chair asked who beeped in on the call. No one ever questioned him not attending the meeting in person, one of the few perks of being in a wheelchair. Most people had little understanding of what he could or could not do. He allowed them to assume his disability kept him away from the face-to- face meetings—not his lack of interest in the committee.
It wasn’t as if he didn’t care about human trafficking. He did. Passionately. DHS was doing good work—between the committee meetings—not during them. The Anomaly Defense Division, however, had more than enough on its plate pursuing leads on terrorist plots. If Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or the other divisions needed his help, they knew where to find him, even if they didn’t know exactly what he and his agents did. That information was on a need-to-know basis. And they didn’t need to know.
Irritated, he shrugged his shoulders, opened the fists he’d unconsciously been squeezing, and shook his arms to release the tension. He should have gone to the gym this morning. Thirty-three laps in the pool, some bench presses, pull-ups, biceps curls, and he’d be loose and relaxed.
Maybe.

What she knows could kill her.
In the spirit of The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown and Shadows of the Stone Benders by K. Patrick Donoghue The Girl Who Knew Da Vinci by Belle Ami unravels an unforgettable mystery.
Three destinies, one remarkable painting.
Will her visions lead her to the truth?
Art historian Angela Renatus is haunted by dreams of Leonardo da Vinci and a mysterious painting of Giuliano Medici and his mistress Fioretta Gorini. A painting that, as far as the world knows, doesn’t exist. Compelled by her visions, Angela is determined to find out the truth.
When Angela is contacted by art detective, Alex Caine, she’s shocked to learn that he too is seeking the same painting. Alex’s client, a wealthy German financier, is determined to clear the name of his late uncle, Gerard Jaeger, an art historian, who went missing in Florence, during World War II. In letters written before his disappearance, the historian describes his love affair with a beautiful young Italian woman named Sophia Caro, and the discovery of an extraordinary painting by the great master himself—a painting depicting Giuliano and Fioretta.
Alex and Angela journey to Florence in search of the priceless treasure. Is it a lost da Vinci, potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars, or a wild goose-chase that will only lead to a dead end? But someone else is searching for the illusive painting—Alberto Scordato is a powerful man in the art world and a sociopath who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, even murder. Scordato knows something about Angela that even she doesn’t know, something that could threaten both Angela and Alex’s lives, forcing them into the crosshairs of fate.

Los Angeles, California
August 3, 2018
It’s her.
Alex almost choked on his martini when he saw the young woman’s reflection in the mirror. He swiveled on his barstool, his heart pounding in his chest and stared, unable to believe his own eyes. Angela Renatus and the girl in front of the painting who’d kissed him so passionately are one and the same.
Alex had managed to grab two seats at the bar of Bistro Prossima Volta—one of the hottest spots in LA. The place was packed. The hipsters who flocked there during the dinner rush, crowded around the ornate mahogany bar, drinking and sampling a vast array of Italian antipasti.
Setting his briefcase on the second stool, he’d ignored the angry glances and ordered a dry martini. He sipped while keeping his eyes locked on the Italian mirror stretching along the wall across from him. He could see the reflection of the restaurant’s entrance and everyone who walked in. Angela had texted him that she was running late. She hadn’t given him a description and he’d neglected to ask. Odd. Alex never forgot to ask. His entire career involved just those kinds of details. And then she walked in. And he knew. He knew it was her.
Her dark hair, secured in an elegant bun, enhanced those movie-star cheekbones. Her brown velvet eyes, framed by the black-rimmed glasses, were a striking contrast to her lush, ruby-red lips. Wearing a crisp, white blouse and a gray, pencil skirt, she paused as she scanned the restaurant, unaware of every male head swiveling to get an eyeful. Damn! He wasn’t the only guy attracted by the hot librarian look. He recalled the temptress who’d kissed him with wild abandon and shifted on his stool. He couldn’t reconcile her disparate behavior. It was as if she were two different women.
When their eyes locked in the mirror, he was surprised to see no reaction or recognition. His pulse quickened. How can she not know me?
She glanced down at her watch.
This wasn’t at all what he’d expected. Embarrassment, yes, confusion and accusations, not this total obliviousness of the erotic passion that had consumed them.
He stood and called out to her. “Angela, Alex Caine.”
She maneuvered through the crowd. “How did you know it was me? I think I forgot to give you a description.”
“Just a guess.”
“Do you prefer Alex or Alexander?
“Everyone calls me Alex,” he said with a grin, offering her his hand.
Angela smiled and took it. “It’s good to meet you.”
Double damn! Gorgeous smile, with a sexy dimple in her left cheek. The touch of her hand sent a jolt through him. Her eyes widened slightly, her hand trembled in his.
“That’s weird,” she whispered, as though to herself.
“What’s weird?” he asked, feigning ignorance. Does she feel it too?
She shook her head, a laugh escaping her. “Sorry, it’s been a long day. It’ll be good to relax. I’m glad you called. Professor Hoffman is one of my dearest friends and my mentor.”
Alex lifted the briefcase and stowed it at his feet, gesturing her to sit. “I’ve known Michael for years. He’s been very supportive of my work.”
She nodded and sat. “Michael is a vault of knowledge and always willing to help.”
Her gaze was direct, but without any recognition that they’d made out a few hours earlier in front of the Botticelli painting. How the hell do you kiss someone like that and not remember?
Her brows knitted as she continued to look at him.
He laughed. “Is there something on my face.”
“Forgive me.” A rosy hue colored her cheeks. “It’s your eyes. They’re so unusual.”
He sat back and scratched his cheek. “Yeah, I get that a lot.” His left eye was pale blue, the right was hazel. “You can blame my parents for the odd combo. Although, no one else in my family has two, different-colored eyes.”
The bartender approached them. “Angela, the usual?”
Her eyes remained locked on his. And she failed to reply to the bartender. Something flickered in her gaze. Not recognition. But something deep. Intense. He suddenly wished they were back at the Getty, sitting in front of the painting, not in a noisy, packed restaurant.
“Hey, Angela,” the bartender repeated. “Do you want the usual?”
Her expression cleared and she glanced up at the bartender. “Sorry, Tim. Yes, please, that would be great. Oh, and some of those yummy meatballs.”
“I’ll have the meatballs, too. And put it on my tab.”
“Got it, man.”
“I can’t let you do that,” she protested.
“Don’t be ridiculous. I called you.” He grinned. “Besides, I’m the one with an expense account.”
She shook her head and chuckled. “I definitely don’t have one of those.”
Alex took a sip of his martini. He couldn’t get past her lack of recognition. He needed to test her, to see whether this act of hers was for real. “Besides trying to convince you to work on this case with me, I’m here on business. In fact, I had a meeting with the director of the Getty today.”
Her eyes widened. “You knew I worked at the Getty, why didn’t you tell me you were planning on being there? We could have grabbed a coffee.”
“I didn’t want to bother you at work. Seeing the Getty was a pleasure, but a brief cup of coffee wouldn’t be enough time for me to get to know you or learn much about your expertise.” Alex had spent years studying body language and facial expressions. He knew when someone was telling the truth or evading it. She genuinely seemed surprised. Which made this mystery all the more strange.
The bartender placed a white sangria in front of her. “Cheers.” She clinked her glass to his and took a sip. “How did your meeting with the director go?”
“Don’t take any offense, but let’s just say I’m not a fan of the guy.”
She nodded, her eyes glancing down at her drink.
“Correct me if I’m wrong but you don’t seem thrilled with him either.”
She took another sip. “I’m having some issues with him.”
He didn’t press her on the director issues. His focus was still on their unforgettable kiss at the museum. “You know, I have this strange feeling that I saw you today.”
She lifted her elegant eyebrows. “You did?”
“Yeah, at the Getty.”
“No, that’s unlikely. I rarely leave my desk at the research center.” She shook her head and a strand of hair came loose. He began to lift his hand, wanting to tuck her hair behind her ear, but caught himself just in time and reached for his drink instead. He needed to unravel the mystery of why Angela had no recollection of what had happened earlier in the day. This woman is either a really good liar, or she’s sleepwalking.

My Review

Rating: 5 Stars
Love this story!!! Venomous Hunger draws me in from the first page and didn't let up until the end.
Aliena is a brave, young woman who goes on fighting even when the odds seem to be against her. So loyal and feisty, too, and it's no wonder that Kamal fell for her. I specifically enjoy the great chemistry between Aliena and Kamal and their romantic development, mating bond aside.
The world building is fantastic. I felt the author is able to get the reader invested in the plight of the humans, especially in Aliena and Kamal. Then, just when you thought the story is over--i.e. the bad guys are captured and everything--the author introduces a twist that made your heart speed up again at this new conflict.
Overall, a captivating paranormal read from a new to me author! Highly recommend.
