A new dark fantasy novel by G.D. Penman
Call Your Steel
CALL YOUR STEEL
G.D. Penman
Genre: Dark Fantasy
Publisher: Azure Spider Publications
Publication Date: October 15, 2017
In the sky above there was no sun.
For millennia beyond reckoning the Eaters of the Gods ruled over this sunless world, waging their secret war on each other through their Chosen, mortals granted a fraction of the Eaters in human powers in exchange for a life of servitude. Kaius counts himself among their hallowed ranks, devoted entirely to his brutal duties. Lucia is no more than a travelling minstrel, albeit one who found herself in the very worst place at the very worst time. How could mere mortals like them stand up against the vast alien power of the Eaters of the Gods?

Dream Cast

I am going to start off by saying that I do not think every book should be made into a film. Books exist as their own thing and not just as film-scripts for a reason. The novel as an artform has a lot to offer, in particular the insights that you can get into each character’s internal world.
With that said, goddamn I really hope Call Your Steel gets made into a movie…
Kaius
There are a lot of great actors out there who I think could capture the personality of Kaius, but there is a physicality and presence to the role that a lot of Hollywood stars probably couldn’t cope with. My favourite for the role is probably Will Yun Lee, he has the right look, the right attitude and the right swagger.
Lucia
In the book, Lucia is left as a bit of blank slate compared to the others. Yes, I am as guilty as Twilight of trying to give the readers a place to insert themselves into the story. Sue me. Based on my description of her, I guess I could see Dive Assad in the role?
Metharia
Anya Taylor-Joy. The Witch was an amazing film, and she carried most of the weight of it on her back. She would absolutely rock as Metharia.
Valerius
It is going to be difficult to find an actor who combines the perfect balance of beauty, grace and skin crawling creepiness to play Valerius. Jonathan Rhys Meyers has always, somewhat inadvertently given off that vibe in many of his roles. Slap a wig on him and we are all set.
Atius
Carrying a big bombastic personality around all day but still being able to deliver on Atius few softer moments is probably going to be tricky, so it really needs an actor with some experience. Chad Coleman has carried off roles like this in the past and I would love to see him getting involved in the more physical scenes with our Kaius.
Malius
Ugh, this guy. Casting Malius is difficult, because you feel like you are handing the actor a lot of really unpleasant experiences later in their life when people mistake them for the character. Ghassan Massoud has the presence and the range but the physical scenes might be a bit much for him. But he would be in armour most of the time, you can shove a stunt man in armour and nobody will notice!

About G.D. Penman

G.D. Penman
G D Penman writes fantasy fiction. He lives in Scotland with his partner and children, some of whom are human. He is a firm believer in the axiom that any story is made better by dragons. His beard has won an award. If you have ever read a story with monster and queer people, it was probably one of his. In those few precious moments that he isn’t parenting or writing he continues his quest to eat the flesh of every living species.
