Plains of Exodus Tour Graphic
Plains of Exodus
Genre: Science Fiction
Publisher: Azure Spider Publications
Publication Date: October 31, 2018
As refugees in a vast sprawling empire, mankind must find and fight for a new homeland after Earth's destruction. Plains of Exodus chronicles this epic struggle.
Mankindís first contact with an extraterrestrial species didnít exactly go well. The inadvertent destruction of the Earth saw a call go out to the vast and ancient empire for help. Despite the quick response to this plea for aid, the remnants of humanity find themselves refugees in an overcrowded galaxy and at the mercy of an empire whose existence predates mankindís own existence.
Unwanted and unwelcome, humanity languishes in a dozen massive colony ships around an energy poor star.
As a young smuggler Jonah Mctier is one of those fortunate few who has access to this millennia old realm, and it is he who after fleeing a triad of imperial cruisers discovers the answer to mankindís dilemma.
In desperation Jonah finds refuge in a parsecs deep dust cloud where he discovers not only a habitable and empty planetary system but one of the most sought after resources in the Milky Way: a spatial conduit. Except this is no ordinary conduit.
Exploitation of this unique and unknown type of spatial gateway offers an alternative to the slow but inevitable descent into extinction for the children of Adam. Key to this bright future is the need to keep their phenomenal find a secret from the resource hungry empire who would take this discovery for themselves and themselves alone.
To complicate matters Jonah discovers that there is more than one of these gateways, and for humanity to be successful in their quest mankind must hold and eventually destroy all of these rare portals.

Excerpt

Jonah was about to ask something when Baby said, “Sensors detect a large decrease in cloud density. We are two minutes from system encounter.”
Then, like passing through a curtain, the ship broke free of the cloud and into clear space. Surprise and delight filled Jonah at the sight of the solitary yellow star on the screen, but it was short-lived.
He saw it then—the shockingly black tear in the fabric of space, massive and oh so dark. And way too close. For just a moment he had time to feel terror and wonder before all hell broke loose.
Everything happened at once. The soft music died under the ululating wail of alarms as Sontule shifted violently around him. The ship’s inertial dampers tried to compensate for the vicious acceleration but failed, and without warning the chair’s automatic restraints shot out and pinned him close, surrounding his torso and legs in a gelatinous hold.
The viewscreen pulsed bright white and froze. Before Jonah could react the screen returned to normal, leaving only the four corners of the arced glass to pulse brightly. Sontule had taken control, shutting him out of the command loop.
He let it. This had happened twice before, and both times he’d found himself grateful for the intervention by the ship’s alien AI.
The nearby sun disappeared abruptly from the screen, and Jonah felt Sontule wrench about—her dual drives whining in protest. A second set of flexible probes surged about his head and neck as the ship accelerated rapidly, hurling him deep into the embrace of the protective chair.
Damn. What the heck was going on? Sweat trickled down his ribs, dampening his bodysuit, and he stared at the rapidly racing data-stream, trying to understand what was happening.
The crimson symbols told him nothing more than he already knew: that he and Sontule had been caught in the grip of a very powerful gravity source, one Baby had identified as a system. Except that system was still half a light-year away and too far to have any influence on them.
And that rip in space. He had heard the ancient stories, the fantastic legends, and he wondered. It was impossible, but what else could it be? Whatever it was it was most likely the reason they had lost contact with the slivers.
Artificial gravity disappeared, and only the chair’s tight restraints stopped him from being torn free from where he sat and sent to slam against one of the bulkheads—protective field or no protective field.
Fear as he had never known it filled him, sending adrenalin racing through his body. Something was controlling the ship, something was tearing at them, dragging them close.
Jonah heard a sound he’d never heard before—a deep groaning moan as if the very fabric of the vessel was being torn apart.
The manic acceleration continued and he was forced deeper and deeper into the chair. His breath caught when the control cabin’s lights flickered and went out, but he fought the panic—trusting to the craft’s AI to see them safe.
And Sontule was fighting back—her artificial mind sending all available power to the engines in an attempt to escape the gravity well.
The entire ship vibrated madly, and the muscles and skin on Jonah’s face stretched and grimaced at the rapid changes in acceleration. Nothing in the past five years had prepared him for this, and he felt terrified and helpless. The sensors offered only gibberish, and nothing was visible on the curved screen but the gray space with its background of luminescent yellow gas streamers.

About Robert J. Burnett

Robert J. Burnett
After crisscrossing the country on more than one occasion, Robert J. Burnett and his wife Louise are currently living in northern British Colombia where they hope each day that they wonít be burnt up in the massive fires ravaging the province. Coming a close second to these fears are the worries about being eaten by bears. Mosquitoes scare him too.
Robís favourite religion is Christianity, but heís never met a druid or a pagan he didnít like. That said, he doesnít like them if theyíre smelly. Same with bears.
His fondest wish is to be abducted by aliens and taken to their home-world where he will miraculously return to his mid-twenties and be given super powers.
His music likes could be said to be a bit eclectic, ranging from classical to Celtic, especially those composed by non-smelly druids or pagans.
Voted in high school as most likely to lose all his teeth before sixty, he can proudly state that this has not happened as he still retains twelve. It is this ferocious smile, he believes, that scare off most bears.
Today he lives a productive life of non-work, listening to Ancient Astronaut and Hangar 51 shows, a hobby he has cultivated in his expectation of being abducted and taken off-planet. At least he wonít lose his job for failing to show up for work.
As a father to four sons, Rob fervently hopes that all his children will breed and produce offspring who in their turn will support him in his dotage.

“That’ll just give them one more hostage,” Kardmelli protested.
“I can be very persuasive,” Olivia said with a feral grin.
Kardmelli stepped back and shivered. The hairs on his arms and legs stood straight up. The pulse on his neck was beating a mile a minute. Nickford was standing hunched over with his eyes wide open and his lower jaw hanging down.
I scared the crap out of both of them, Olivia thought. Nickford looks as if he’s about to pee his pants.
Kardmelli started to speak, but then had to clear his throat. “We’ll do whatever you want,” he said.
“You are ready to do what we asked?” an accented voice asked when Kardmelli buzzed the galley with the intercom.
“We have a woman who wants to speak with you.”
“You know what we want. We will not talk to anyone else, especially a woman!”
“Please just let her in to talk to you. She won’t be armed. What can another five minutes matter?”
There was a brief pause, and the voice said, “She wants to come in here? We will allow that, but five minutes is all she will get until time starts again.”
“You must assure me you’ll allow her to leave if you cannot come to an agreement,” Kardmelli said in mild attempt to remove suspicion of a trap.
“Of course, of course,” the voice said. Olivia knew he was lying. He wouldn’t want to pass up the opportunity to get one more hostage.
***
Olivia entered the galley, now very crowded with eight people in it. The door was slammed shut behind her by a man holding a gun. The captain was lying on the floor, clearly dead, with his throat slashed. So much for their promise to release him. Two of the attendants were crying, being watched over by a second man, standing to the side, wielding a knife. The third attendant, more defiant, was being held by a third terrorist who had one arm wrapped around her body and a knife to her neck. He relaxed slightly when he saw how small the new hostage was.
Olivia quickly assessed the situation, and decided she could probably handle it without changing and all the crap that would ensue if a leopard were to suddenly appear, apparently out of nowhere. She took two steps toward the man holding the attendant. He looked her over. An evil grin came to his face.
Moving so fast she was a blur, Olivia grasped the arm holding the knife, twisting it and breaking the wrist, grabbed the knife as it fell, and plunged it into the man’s heart. She shoved the body toward the man with the gun, and leaped toward the third man, who was too stunned to react immediately. She took hold of his head using both hands and twisted violently, snapping his spinal column. She caught his knife before it hit the floor and threw it at the terrorist with the gun, now entangled with his dead companion.
He ducked away from the flying knife. That gave Olivia time to move forward, grab his gun, and yank it out of his hand, dislocating his elbow in the process. He screamed in pain. Before he could react in any other way, she broke both of his clavicles with a two-handed karate chop, keeping him alive for questioning, but rendering him helpless.
“Holy Mary Mother of God,” one of the attendants murmured. Her eyes were opened wide. Her pupils were dilated. She was taking deep breaths and her hands were shaking. Beads of sweat were on her face, even though the room was cool. “Who are you?” she croaked.
“Secret Service,” Olivia replied as she opened the galley door.

Excerpt

Washington, D.C.
Homeland Security Headquarters
Bert Blackfeather stared at the email on his screen, re-read it for the tenth time, and shook his head in disbelief. A political appointee—a woman with absolutely no background in Homeland Security or any other intelligence matters—was now his new boss, the Under Secretary for Management. Unbelievable. Third in command of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), assistant and advisor to the Secretary and Under Secretary on all administrative, financial, and personnel matters—and not a blessed thing in her bio indicated she was fit for the position—except the fact that her mother was the highest-ranking member of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Not that he disliked Senator Ruth Wagner. She asked good questions, some so penetrating he wondered if she had a few psychic powers of her own. Her willingness to reach across the aisle and her impeccable integrity meant she accomplished more than many of her male colleagues who had served in the role. Senator Wagner’s husband, a member of the senior leadership team of the U.S. State Department, had died in a mysterious boating accident on the Chesapeake Bay. His unoccupied twenty-two-foot power boat had run aground on Tilghman Island, and the Coast Guard recovered his body two days later. The Medical Examiner said he died from drowning in brackish water, combined with hypothermia. Arguing that the bay was salt, not fresh or brackish water, rumor had it the senator had demanded the case be reopened, but neither the Talbot County Police, the Maryland State Police, nor a private investigator could find evidence of wrongful death. Case closed, Ruth Wagner soldiered on, raising her daughter on her own, without the live-in help she could have well afforded. If Senator Wagner had been the political appointee, he would have been fine with the placement. But accept her unqualified daughter as his equal, much less his superior?
Never.
The previous Under Secretary’s management style had been much more hands off, seldom interfering with his division—unless he ran over budget. This one, on the other hand—can you say micro-manager? Already, without even asking him if he wanted to do it, with not so much as an email, the new Under Secretary had appointed him to the intra-agency and inter-agency committee to combat human trafficking, the Blue Campaign.
He had attended one session in person and found nothing of substantive value for him to contribute or learn. Besides, he had no desire to sit in face-to-face meetings while his wet-behind-the-ears boss sat with the head honchos in the enormous meeting room. In this case, maintaining a low profile was his best strategy. Rather than wasting his time watching the other directors and assistant directors vie for her attention, he chose to attend the monthly meeting by conference call.
At least that way, he could get some work done and say “Bert Blackfeather, Director of the Anomaly Defense Division” when the chair asked who beeped in on the call. No one ever questioned him not attending the meeting in person, one of the few perks of being in a wheelchair. Most people had little understanding of what he could or could not do. He allowed them to assume his disability kept him away from the face-to- face meetings—not his lack of interest in the committee.
It wasn’t as if he didn’t care about human trafficking. He did. Passionately. DHS was doing good work—between the committee meetings—not during them. The Anomaly Defense Division, however, had more than enough on its plate pursuing leads on terrorist plots. If Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or the other divisions needed his help, they knew where to find him, even if they didn’t know exactly what he and his agents did. That information was on a need-to-know basis. And they didn’t need to know.
Irritated, he shrugged his shoulders, opened the fists he’d unconsciously been squeezing, and shook his arms to release the tension. He should have gone to the gym this morning. Thirty-three laps in the pool, some bench presses, pull-ups, biceps curls, and he’d be loose and relaxed.
Maybe.

Jonah didn’t know old Earth, didn’t have parents who grieved for such a loss, and his only real desire at this point in his life was to join his friends on Wild-deck to drink that sphere of dark beer so dearly bought for his birthday.
Well, he’d seen the stars for the first time. It had been worth missing the party, and besides he had received a much better gift that day than just a bellyful of beer and a hangover—he had found Sontule.
Five years had passed since Sontule had come into his possession, and that irascible deckmaster had passed away a couple of years ago. Yes, it was definitely strange how fortune graced some while leaving others untouched. Some had gained fame and ease, what ease could be found on the colony ships, by their looks or skill at amusement—something the holocasts demanded.
That hadn’t been Jonah’s gateway out of poverty. Oh yeah, he was tall enough, and had the blond hair and blue eyes of some long ago Germanic ancestry, but contrary to popular belief the entertainment industry required more than just good looks.
No, his fortune had come from luck and luck only, but this was something he wasn’t going to complain about.
Only half-conscious, his mind skirled about the past—slipping randomly from memories of Sontule’s discovery to life on Alterhome.
The great colony ship was home to over twenty thousand inhabitants. It’s design allowed for half of this, but mankind had seen almost a century in an alien ship whose designers had provided temporary accommodation for considerably less souls and for a limited amount of time.
Alterhome and its eleven siblings had housed what was left of the human race for nearly a century since the exodus, and to this day much of its vast exterior remained unmapped and according to the old deckmaster in dire need of maintenance from those young colonists under her fleshless hand.
Jonah wasn’t the first to discover a ship hidden or forgotten on one of the colony ships. There had been others—not many by any means—, but Jonah’s rare find had been the first in nearly a quarter century.
Then, as if finding the alien craft wasn’t lucky enough, it became clear that the ship was of Abellian design. The Abellians had been extinct for almost fifty thousand years, but their craftsmanship was still valued and much sought after throughout the empire.
The salvage rights had gone to him, of course, and this legal procedure had seen him evolve from faceless nobody to smuggler, one of the envied few who could leave the overcrowded and hopeless life dictated by the colony ships.
This transition from unknown to smuggler seemed to happen overnight—a modern day Cinderella story where it had been his, Jonah Mactier’s, graceful foot which had fitted the glass slipper.
Progression from slipper to castle to happily ever after had not gone quite as smoothly for him. Finding one of these abandoned or forgotten craft meant leaving his old life behind—something he didn’t mind one bit.
Jonah wasn’t stupid. He knew his life was never going to be the same again, but what caught him off-balance was the enormous amount of attention suddenly focused on him—some desired and some most definitely not.
Those who brokered power on Alterhome wanted him to join them, and their suit had been powerful and compelling, as well as being heavily laced with the poison of guilt and duty owed. Others had just wanted his ship, preferably without him, and they were quite willing to use any means necessary to get the Abellian vessel. Those had been the beginnings of exciting times.

Returning home was just the beginning, but staying…might be her end.
After uncovering a devastating secret, Casey McKay left her beloved home town and pretended not to look back. For years, the truth her sisters hid from her has kept her away. Now, in desperate need of Casey’s help, her sisters have hired a PI to find her.
As a private investigator, Ryan Keller is used to getting into sticky situations, but nothing could have prepared him for the likes of Ms. McKay. Unable to resist her appeal for help, Ryan returns with her to Blue Creek. Little do they know they are walking right into a deadly plot to destroy the McKay sisters.
The closer they get to the truth, the harder it is for them to resist temptation. But succumbing to their desires puts Ryan in the crosshairs of a vengeful foe. To save them, Casey must face her past and the secrets that have shaped her.

My Review

I haven't read the first book, and I must admit to some confusion when I started reading this book. There are undercurrents beneath the words being said, and I can't help but be intrigued yet confused by the secrets that appeared to have driven the sisters apart six years ago. But as I read on, it became easier to be caught up in the story and the characters, and you can't help but want the villain to be caught and the McKay family to have the happy ending they deserve.
I love each of the sisters--they're individually depicted with their own personalities. I have to applaud the author for being able to give distinctive qualities to her characters and making them stand out in some way. I especially love little Mackenzie! I'm also intrigued by Casey's parents, making me want to go back and read book 1!
Needless to say, I enjoyed this story a lot, especially as I love suspense with my romance. I can't wait to see what else W.L. Brooks has in store for us in future installments!

It was late afternoon by the time Ryan pulled into the lane leading to the old farmhouse. The sky was dark from the storms passing through, only adding to his unease. All the back roads had looked the same to him, so he had stopped at a gas station to make sure he was going the right way.
He pulled into the driveway and waited a few minutes before cutting off the engine. He retrieved his gun from the glove compartment and got out of the car. He closed the door with as much finesse as possible and put the 9 mm in his slacks, so it rested against the small of his back.
The farmhouse was a good size, two stories. He knew it had belonged to J. T. Vaughn, their grandfather. Vaughn had been the father of Emmit McKay’s first wife. The sisters didn’t like talking about her, even amongst themselves, which piqued his curiosity. He had done a bit of research on the matter, but that was neither here nor there at this point.
He edged around the overgrown lawn and headed for the house. He had yet to see any signs of life. There was a shed at the rear of the property, and Ryan decided to try there first.
The grass was thick and damp from the rain. An ominous screech filled the air when he lifted the latch. The scent of oil and rust hit his nostrils as he shone his pocket light into the darkness.
