An Excerpt From Stormy Weather

A straight-backed wooden chair stood in the center of the room. I was forced to sit there. As I watched with growing fear of what was going to happen next, the two men arranged themselves around the room. The chauffeur, who had cold, light blue eyes, stood directly in front of me. Adams moved to my extreme left and leaned against the front of a desk.

“Now that you’ve had some time to consider the situation, Ms. McCloud, are you ready to tell me the whereabouts of my property?”

“I’m afraid that I still don’t know where your property is.”

I tried to sound firm and reasonable but my voice was a little high and it shook.

“Before we begin, perhaps you should tape her wrists together,” Adams said.

The chauffeur took a roll of gray duct tape off of an end table and approached me. As he moved toward me, I saw that he wore a gun on his left side.

“Stand up,” he ordered.

I got to my feet.

I probably would not have been able to do what I did next if I’d had time to think about it. But I knew that once my hands were bound, it was all over.

“Turn around,” he ordered.

I started to turn but then pretended to stumble toward him. He automatically reached out with his empty right hand to steady me. As I stumbled I twisted to my right and pulled the gun out of his holster, then I took a quick step backwards, knocking over the chair. Recognizing it by feel alone, I thanked my lucky stars that he was carrying another Glock.

He took a step towards me but something in my face caused him to stop. I glanced over at Adams, but he kept his hands at his sides. I hoped he was unarmed.

“Don’t be silly, Ms. McCloud. This will only make things worse,” Adams said.

He nodded toward the chauffeur, who reluctantly moved toward me.

The vase on the table next to his right arm exploded into fragments. He jumped to his left. Then he looked at his right hand, which had begun to bleed.

“Another step and I start aiming at people,” I said.

“I should never have asked Alex to help me. It’s too dangerous. I should have simply hired someone to find my father and deliver a message, telling him what Fredrick was up to. Don’t you see, I’ve put all of us in danger, and if you help me I can hire someone in Palma, and then Alex can go back to England. I can see what returning to the Mediterranean is doing to him. He’s worried about me, about my father, and it’s not his responsibility.”

“You want me to go behind Alex’s back and help you hire someone else?”

“Alex is far too gallant to consider calling off the search. I have already tried to convince him to return home. But if we both persuade him that my father will be warned by the men we hire, then he might listen.”

An Excerpt From Seducing Sensei

Sighing, I pocketed my wire cutters, turned down the hall and went to my classroom. Mr. Goyas brightened my dismay. I wasn’t looking forward to homeroom. The reason—Itsuma Karter. My personal hellion and troublemaker, class clown, ring leader, jailbait agitator. Well, he was technically legal, but trouble all the same. 

The bell rang and Itsuma strolled in like a tomcat who’d been laid the night before. Jealous much? I sighed.

Itsuma was wearing his infuriating iPod earplugs while in class. Again. For the past week I’d been asking him to leave the MP3 player in his bag. School rules dictated that any devices were to be shut off during school hours. I was within my rights to yell at him for breaking the policy, but I didn’t care during homeroom, usually. 

Smoothing down my imperial mustache, I started roll call.

“Lori Rogers,” I said.

“Here.”

“Jake Rayier.”

“Present.”

“Pierre Gaskal.”

“Good morning.”

I went down, concentrating on the list. Granted, I must have sounded like a bored baby sitter, but the difference between here and university was a world of difference. Especially in student attitude. College at least had some students with a semblance of paying attention. 

“Itsuma Karter,” I said. 

Nothing. 

I kept my eyes on the roster, trying not to lose my place on the list. I wasn’t great at names and faces. Something I was trying to work on.

“Itsuma?”

No answer. I looked up. Itsuma’s hand was propped under his chin while he stared out the window. 

Damn it. Yes, I knew he was here. Yes, I should let it go. But the blatant disrespect made my shit flip. “Itsuma?” Just fucking answer. 

Across the way, in the seat next to him, Scott Cooper waved at his classmate, trying to gain his attention. Itsuma even ignored his friend. That was it. Who did he think he was? Why the fuck was it so hard to just respond to a roll call? Hell, right now, I’d even take an “up yours” as an answer. And I hated losing my place on the roster. 

“Itsuma!” Standing up, I rounded my desk, put my hands in my pockets and made my way towards my problem child. Students leaned away from me as I barreled down the aisle. 

iPod in hand, Itsuma continued to stare outside, acting like he didn’t see me. If he thought he could act like a prick and then turn innocent and gracious like he did yesterday, he was in for a surprise. 

I pulled the wire cutters out of my pocket, snipped the cord and snatched the MP3 player out of his hand. 

Itsuma jerked his head, and in that split-second I saw the molten hate within his pupils. I expected him to scream back, call me nasty names and threaten me with bodily harm. He did nothing but sit there. The darkness in his expression chilled. Fast as a flick he smiled like everything was okay.

“Itsuma Karter,” I said. “At least respond to your name.”

“Yes, Mr. Reis. Sorry about that.” Itsuma batted his eyelashes.

Not buying it. His blasé faire attitude made me want to smack him. Was he just going to pretend everything was hunky-dory even though I’d annihilated his personal property? The school allowed confiscating electronic items. Destroying them—not so much.

An Excerpt from the Book

The young man’s chin stuck out. His back stiffened, his gaze glued to Sam. “You? You’re just a rodeo washout.”

Sam stood his ground. The young man’s narrowed eyes screamed for someone to kick some sense into him, and Sam wanted to be that person. Since he recognised Sam, he was probably a local. Didn’t mean he could act like a jackass.

Affrica ran a hand along his arm, distracting him from his thoughts. “Let’s just go,” she said.

Walking away wasn’t Sam’s style, and he held the guy’s stare, challenging him to make the first move. Please do.

The guy looked away first and leapt into the crowd with his mates. Smart move.

With Sam’s arm still tight around Affrica, they wove past the herd, closing in on a staircase that vanished behind a wall.

Halfway up the steps, he stopped in the shadows, giving them complete isolation. She stood by his side, green eyes dominating her pale face. Behind the wall, the music reverberated, but at that moment, the two of them were all that mattered.

“You all right? Did that jerk hurt you?” His fingers pressed into the soft flesh of her arm and the sensation of her skin against his sent fire blazing through him. He’d intended to simply ask her if she was okay, but his pulse was raging, and being close to Affrica in that moment felt right.

She shook her head. “Yeah, I’m fine. You don’t need to get into fights on my behalf, but thanks.”

Her skin burned beneath his fingertips, messing with his head. It had been a long time since he had been compelled to protect anyone. Yet something about Affrica made him want to guard her. To cover her in cotton wool and keep her safe.

Sam pitched a hand against the wall above her shoulder and inhaled her honeyed fragrance mixed with hints of crisp citrus. What had she done to him? They hadn’t even ordered dinner and already he was contemplating kissing her. Tone it back, man.

The rise and fall of Affrica’s chest quickened, and the fire inside him dove south.

An abrupt cacophony of giggles erupted from farther down the staircase. Sam didn’t glance at the strangers; he couldn’t pull his gaze from Affrica’s parted, glossy lips. He wondered if they tasted as sweet as they looked.

Affrica’s attention was drawn to the people who stomped up the stairs as they passed, a frown capturing her brow. She slipped out from under his arm. “Let’s get going.”

He battled the fumes in his head and stared at the way the fabric of her dress rode up the backs of her thighs, dancing across her butt, teasing him. Girls had always vied for his attention, but he’d never wanted any of them the way he did Affrica. Was it because she wasn’t jumping all over him but playing hard to get? He adjusted his belt buckle and strode up after her, taking two steps at a time.

An Excerpt From Thicker Than Blood

“The door opened, and Dakota’s brother Maurice walked in with a stricken look. Koko was behind him, cradled by Brayden while she cried. Caden heard the girls all gasp, and then they started to cry, too.

He felt the blood drain from his face as the world tilted. He braced for the worst. They were going to tell him she didn’t make it. No, please, I want a second chance. He had to find out what her desperate declaration had meant in the car. He had to know.

He looked to Maurice for answers. “Tell me please.”

Maurice looked at Caden’s face, feeling sorry for him for the first time in over two years, realizing Caden still cared for his baby sister. He never knew why they had broken up. All he knew was she had been devastated, and he resented Caden for that.

“She’s still in surgery, but they believe she had a stroke on the table. Some Thrombotic—”

“A vascular bleed stroke, probably caused by the removal of the metal piece. It must have torn one of the main arteries to her brain,” Caden finished with the proper diagnosis.

“Yes,” Maurice replied. “The doctor said as much but they don’t know how much damage has been done. That was one of the assisting doctors. The surgeon is still working on her, and will come out and talk to us after he’s done.”

Caden’s paramedic training took over as he calmly explained the diagnosis to everyone gathered around. “They can’t determine the damage until she comes out of the anesthetic, when they can assess the location of the stroke. The doctors will look for neurological deficits, abnormalities in her mental status, and lack of movement in her limbs. All we can hope for is that they were able to repair the vein and minimal damage occurred.”

“Oh no, that doesn’t sound good at all,” Jocelyn replied on a cry as her hand flew to cover her heart.

“No, don’t misunderstand me,” Caden replied quickly, realizing he was freaking them out more. “Dakota is a very strong, healthy young woman, and that will all work to her advantage. If there is any damage, she will be able to have physical therapy and reteach her body everything she might have lost.” 

“She works in conjunction with the physical therapists all the time. She will know how important her therapy is,” Taya jumped in. “I know her; she will have the determination to get better as soon as possible. Girls, remember when her student Naz had his stroke? She went to the hospital every other day to help him work on his physical therapy. If I remember correctly, she performed reiki, too. I’m sure he was back at school months before the doctors projected.”

“Caden watched as Koko’s face changed from concern to disgust as she listened to Dakota’s friends talk about Dakota’s talent in healing Naz’s little body.

“Are you serious? You can’t honestly believe in that mumbo-jumbo crap. Running your hands over someone’s body and pretending to heal it,” Koko scoffed. “I thought you girls were smarter than that.”

Ryder being Ryder, and not used to censoring his speech, spoke out of turn and nearly got them all kicked out. “Hope the witch didn’t park her broomstick too close to my car.”
